The price of viscose staple fiber has been flat at 14,200 CNY/ton for several consecutive days. This figure marks the highest point in the past year (July 2025 to July 2026), with a spread of 1,400 CNY from the year's low of 12,800 CNY, representing a gain of over 10%. However, the market has not seen a buying frenzy; instead, a cautious wait-and-see sentiment prevails.
Supply-Demand Dynamics Behind the High Price
According to publicly available industry data, the current price of viscose staple fiber 1.2D sits at a one-year high. The annual average price is approximately 13,242 CNY/ton, with a median of 13,500 CNY. This means the current price is about 7.2% above the annual average and 5.2% above the median. The historical range of 12,800 to 14,200 CNY is not extreme, but a prolonged stay at the top often signals a critical phase of upstream-downstream negotiation.
Such a plateau typically occurs in two scenarios: first, when upstream raw material costs (dissolving pulp, caustic soda, etc.) remain firm, supporting producers' pricing; second, when downstream yarn and fabric makers lack orders and cannot accept higher quotes. The current market leans toward the latter—end-apparel consumption recovery has been weaker than expected, with weaving sector operating rates at 60-70%, leading to hand-to-mouth purchasing of raw materials and a near-absence of speculative stockpiling.
Pressure Distribution Along the Supply Chain
For viscose staple fiber producers, while the 14,200 CNY price is high, profit margins have not expanded proportionally. Imported dissolving pulp prices have risen alongside auxiliary material costs like caustic soda and sulfuric acid, squeezing the cash flow of smaller plants. Larger, concentrated players can lock in some profits through long-term contracts, but spot market trading activity has notably declined.
Downstream, the pressure is more acute for spinners. Viscose staple fiber is the key raw material for rayon yarn. Yarn prices have been passively pushed up by costs, but gray fabric and finished fabric segments have weak bargaining power, compressing spinners' processing margins. Some weavers have begun adjusting product mixes, reducing rayon fabric production in favor of polyester-cotton, pure cotton, or other differentiated varieties.
Practical Recommendations for Procurement and Inventory Management
The current price environment demands tighter supply chain management. Speculative stockpiling carries significantly increased risk, especially with no clear sign of end-demand recovery.
