The polyester staple fiber (PSF) price, after rebounding from an annual low of 6,267 CNY/ton, is currently hovering around 7,373 CNY/ton, exactly at the midpoint of its one-year price range. Behind these seemingly stable figures lies a tug-of-war along the industrial chain and pressure for structural adjustment.

Shift in the Price Center

Industry public data shows that from July 2025 to July 2026, PSF prices peaked at 8,426 CNY/ton, bottomed at 6,267 CNY/ton, with an annual average of approximately 6,985 CNY/ton. The current level of 7,373 CNY/ton is about 5.5% above the annual average, yet remains over 1,000 CNY/ton below the historical peak. This 'mid-range oscillation' pattern indicates a market lacking both strong upward momentum and the impetus for a deep decline.

Notably, the single-day increase on July 14 was 0.56%, and combined with a cumulative decline of 0.61% since the beginning of the month, prices are exhibiting narrow-range fluctuations. This suggests that short-term market sentiment is cautious, with both buyers and sellers waiting for clearer directional signals.

Supply-Demand Dynamics

On the supply side, the price trends of PSF raw materials—PTA and MEG—directly determine the strength of cost support. Current PTA capacity is high, while downstream polyester plant operating rates have not increased correspondingly, leading to accumulated raw material inventories and putting downward pressure on PSF prices. Meanwhile, some PSF producers, facing thin margins, have opted for maintenance or production cuts in an attempt to stabilize prices through reduced supply, though the effectiveness of this strategy remains to be seen.

The demand side faces a more complex situation. The recovery of domestic textile and apparel end-consumption is slower than expected, with downstream yarn mills adopting a 'buy-as-needed' strategy and showing little willingness to build inventory. Although foreign trade orders show signs of recovery, growth is limited due to global economic slowdown and trade friction uncertainties. This 'weak demand' scenario makes it difficult for PSF prices to find effective support.

Chain Reactions in Industrial Clusters

As major PSF consumption areas, textile clusters like Shengze and Keqiao directly reflect market conditions through their purchasing behavior. According to industry observations, weaving enterprises in these regions are currently more inclined to purchase cost-effective recycled PSF or differentiated products, while reducing procurement of conventional grades. This structural shift implies that traditional PSF is facing erosion of its market share by substitutes.

Furthermore, the price spread between polyester and cotton is a key variable affecting PSF demand. When PSF holds a clear price advantage over cotton, downstream mills actively increase the blending ratio; conversely, they may switch to cotton or other fibers. The current cotton-polyester spread is within a reasonable range and has not triggered large-scale substitution, but if PSF prices remain under pressure, its competitive advantage will become more pronounced.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - The current price is at the annual midpoint, not an extreme high or low. It is advisable to place orders in batches based on actual order schedules to avoid price risks from concentrated replenishment. - Monitor inventory changes in raw materials PTA and MEG. If both show a trend of accumulation, PSF prices may soften further, allowing for delayed procurement. - Evaluate the cost-effectiveness of differentiated products (e.g., recycled PSF, antibacterial/flame-retardant functional fibers). When conventional specifications remain stagnant, consider alternatives to optimize costs.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - When quoting for export orders, incorporate PSF price fluctuation risks into terms, such as adopting a 'floating price plus price lock range' model to prevent raw material cost volatility from eroding margins. - Use the current mid-range price window to sign short-term framework agreements with upstream suppliers, locking in part of the volume to prepare for potential seasonal demand recovery in the second half of the year. - Monitor capacity dynamics in Southeast Asian markets. If local PSF capacity is released, it may impact domestic export prices, necessitating advance planning for high value-added products.

In summary, the PSF market is in a stalemate phase with 'a ceiling above and a floor below.' For industry chain participants, rather than betting on directional price moves, it is more prudent to focus on cost control and product differentiation.
