A design competition running for 24 years is reshaping the underlying logic of China's home textile industry. The 2026 'Haining Home Textile Cup' creative design competition launched its judging process on July 11 in Xucun Town, with the theme 'Weaving the Present, Striding Forward,' clearly targeting the contemporary transformation of traditional craftsmanship and sustainable innovation. Behind the event lies Xucun's industrial foundation of producing 2.8 billion meters of home textile fabric annually and a manufacturing network involving over 2,000 enterprises.
Data behind the industrial scale
This year's competition received 2,744 drawings from 130 institutions, including 116 schools and 14 companies; the fabric design group received 277 works from 46 institutions. The high participation reflects the industry's persistent demand for design innovation. Xucun Party Secretary Xu Xinfeng revealed that Xucun's home textile output value has exceeded 12.2 billion yuan, with the 2025 fabric exhibition and intangible cultural heritage conference further amplifying the industrial voice.
The key is that the design competition is no longer just about creative competition but directly linked to production capacity. The fabric track focuses on material texture and innovation, with over 200 enterprises entering the national-style track, where digital jacquard technology enables industrial-scale production of traditional intangible cultural heritage patterns. This means the conversion cycle from original design to fabric is significantly shortening, providing a tangible solution to the homogenization dilemma.
Industry-education integration: from talent pool to supply chain closure
Wang Yi, vice president of the China Home Textile Industry Association, pointed out that the event serves three core functions: discovering, cultivating, and reserving design talent. Hundreds of schools compete annually, effectively supplementing the industry's shortage of high-quality design talent. Xucun's local fashion college graduates 90 students each year, who directly enter enterprises through the competition, forming a closed-loop talent system of 'teaching through competition, using through competition.'
Cao Yaoqiang, president of the Haining Home Textile Association, emphasized that the industry is transitioning from a traditional exhibition economy to place-based specialty, but the competition's influence remains largely within designer circles. The next step is to broaden publicity, drive original design with market demand, and reduce enterprises' reliance on copying overseas products. This means the conversion rate of design competition outcomes will become a new benchmark for industrial health.
AI and digitization: efficiency multipliers for design
AI-assisted design has already penetrated Xucun's home textile production. Xu Xinfeng stated that AI tools multiply creative efficiency, providing original support for the annual 2.8 billion meters of fabric. The organizing committee also plans to expand AI and fabric-specific tracks to deepen the integration of digital design with the industry. For buyers, this means lower sampling costs and shorter selection cycles, as the past reliance on overseas design libraries is being replaced by local originality.
Regional brand upgrade: from 'Made in Xucun' to global value chains
Positioned as a 'National Trend Fashion Town,' Xucun integrates the production capacity of over 2,000 enterprises with home textile city resources, building an online competition platform to expand global participation. The Haining Home Textile Cup, in conjunction with fabric exhibitions and intangible cultural heritage conferences, is pushing the regional brand onto the international stage. Vice President Yang Zhaohua's remarks cut to the chase: use digital tools to tell the story of Chinese home textile design and help brands climb the global value chain.
