A design competition that has run for 23 years is rewriting the underlying logic of China's home textile industry. On July 11, the 2026 Haining Home Textile Cup was launched in Xucun Town, with 2,744 sketches and 277 fabric works submitted, revealing a complete transformation chain from creativity to mass production, from institutions to factories, and from domestic market to global competition.
From Talent Pool to Industrial Accelerator
Yang Zhaohua, Vice President of the China National Textile and Apparel Council, stated that the Haining Home Textile Cup has evolved from a single competition into an industry-recognized talent pool and main platform for industry-academia collaboration over 23 years. Hundreds of institutions and enterprise designers compete annually, with many emerging talents directly absorbed by the industry. Wang Yi, Vice President of the China Home Textile Association, revealed that future efforts will focus on five dimensions: building a design talent database, deepening school-enterprise collaborations, expanding AI and fabric-specific tracks, hosting regular designer events, and improving growth incentive systems, aiming to open the full-cycle channel for designer development. This shift means the competition is transitioning from 'talent selection' to 'industrial ecosystem cultivation.'
For buyers, the direct value lies in this transformation: original design supply no longer relies on fragmented individual collaborations but achieves scaled connections through the competition platform. Xucun Party Secretary Xu Xinfeng provided key data: the local area produces 2.8 billion meters of home textile fabric annually, with over 2,000 enterprises capable of linking competition fabric works for sampling and mass production. The competition not only reduces R&D trial costs for fabric companies but also ensures a continuous creative reserve for the 'Good Fabric, Made in Xucun' brand.
The Dual Breakthrough of Chinese-Style Aesthetics and AI Empowerment
The theme of this year's competition, 'Weaving the Present, Reaching the Future,' precisely addresses industry pain points. Wang Yang, convener of the fabric track and professor at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, explained that 'Weaving the Present' focuses on extracting traditional patterns and intangible cultural heritage aesthetics, while 'Reaching the Future' points toward green, low-carbon, and digital weaving. Xucun's practice has validated this direction: digital jacquard technology has revitalized intangible cultural heritage, with over 200 enterprises entering the Chinese-style aesthetics track, and the output value of above-scale home textile enterprises reached 12.2 billion yuan in 2025.
AI-assisted design is reshaping creative efficiency. Xu Xinfeng mentioned that AI tools have already injected original support into Xucun's home textile fabrics, directly alleviating the long-standing homogenization problem in the industry. For foreign trade enterprises, this means: the model of relying on overseas sample copying is being replaced by original design, and the combination of AI and weaving techniques allows differentiated products to enter the international market at lower costs and faster speeds.
The Global Ambition of Regional Brands
Cao Yaoqiang, President of the Haining Home Textile Association, admitted that the competition's influence is still largely limited to local and niche designer circles, with the industrial transformation value of design outcomes not yet fully unleashed. To address this, Xucun is pushing for competition upgrades: opening new tracks such as functional fabrics, reforming the evaluation mechanism to strengthen market orientation, and organizing the 'Haining Home Textile' regional brand to appear at top domestic and international exhibitions.
The core logic of this strategy is to use the competition as a front-end phase for brand export. Through a dual-wheel drive of 'home textile + apparel' and the protection of a copyright service center, Xucun aims to upgrade from a mere fabric production base to an industrial highland with design discourse power. For global buyers, this signals that China's home textile supply chain is shifting from 'order-based production' to 'creativity-led'—Xucun is no longer just a price-sensitive manufacturing base but a partner capable of providing complete design solutions.
