On July 15, the polyester staple fiber market showed a rare two-tier pricing: fiber ball series held firm at 15,500 CNY/ton, while melt-spun cotton-type staple fiber slumped to a range of 7,370-7,650 CNY/ton, widening the spread to over 7,800 CNY/ton. This structural divergence means that a one-size-fits-all procurement strategy for "polyester staple fiber" is no longer viable; buyers must differentiate by grade and region.
Grade Divergence: Fiber Balls vs. Cotton-Type
For fiber balls, Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd. quoted a uniform 15,500 CNY/ton for diameters 30mm, 40mm, and 50mm, delivered in Zhengzhou. The price has remained unchanged since June, reflecting rigid demand from the water treatment sector—stricter industrial wastewater discharge standards are driving shorter replacement cycles for filter media in power plants and chemical factories. Buyers who fail to lock in prices now may face supply tightness and premiums later in the year.
In contrast, cotton-type polyester staple fiber saw Zhejiang Tianchen Textile Supply Chain Co., Ltd. quote Zhonglei brand (grade A, 1.56dtex*38mm) at 7,650 CNY/ton, delivered in Huzhou; Hebei Chujiao Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. quoted Huahong brand, same specification, at 7,370 CNY/ton, delivered in Wuxi. The 280 CNY/ton spread far exceeds normal regional logistics costs, signaling supply-demand imbalance: mills in Jiangsu and Zhejiang are cutting output, causing inventory buildup, while buyers in Hebei and Shandong are shifting to differentiated products, weakening demand for standard grades.
Cost and Demand Squeeze
The weakness in cotton-type staple fiber is not an isolated event. Upstream PTA prices have been declining in early July, with ample PX supply and polyester sector cuts pushing spot PTA below 5,800 CNY/ton. The raw material collapse has eroded cost support, while downstream spinners and nonwovens producers, facing sluggish apparel orders, are adopting a hand-to-mouth buying strategy. This transmission chain leaves cotton-type staple fiber as the most pressured link in the polyester chain.
Fiber balls' strength comes from a separate track. The water treatment industry is insulated from textile cycles, and fiber balls, as consumables, require regular replacement once installed. Henan Kaijie's high price indicates no new supply capacity has come online, while demand—from municipal wastewater upgrades and industrial circulating water treatment—continues to grow steadily. For traders handling both grades, the optimal strategy is to prioritize fiber balls and reduce exposure to cotton-type.
Regional Signals: Wuxi as a Price Trough
The Wuxi delivery price of 7,370 CNY/ton is approaching the industry cost line. If this price persists for over two weeks, small and medium-sized staple fiber mills in Jiangsu and Zhejiang may be forced to cut production or switch grades, leading to supply contraction and a potential floor in the 7,300-7,400 CNY/ton range. However, any rebound is capped by PTA trends—if PTA continues to fall, cotton-type may follow to 7,100 CNY/ton.
The Huzhou price of 7,650 CNY/ton is relatively firm, possibly due to local mills taking high-count yarn orders. Buyers should compare regional spreads: sourcing from Wuxi and shipping to Huzhou could save about 150 CNY/ton after logistics, but they must verify the substitutability of Huahong vs. Zhonglei brands in downstream spinning.
