6,043 yuan per ton — that is the benchmark price of PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid) as of July 16, 2026. Compared to 5,823 yuan at the start of the month, the increase is 3.78%, pushing the price into the upper-middle range of the past year. For the chemical fiber industry, this means cost transmission from upstream raw materials to downstream polyester products is accelerating, forcing a redistribution of profit margins across the chain.

Price Behavior: Mid-to-High Volatility, Narrowing Range

Over the past year, PTA has traded between 4,363.25 yuan and 6,932.90 yuan, with a median of 5,648.08 yuan. The current price of 6,043 yuan is still nearly 890 yuan below the year's high, but well above the annual average of 5,393.48 yuan. This indicates PTA is operating on a relatively elevated plateau, not at an extreme peak.

Notably, the daily increase was only 0.31%, suggesting a gentle climb rather than a sharp spike. Such gradual but persistent price rises are more challenging for downstream buyers than sudden surges, because they steadily erode margins without giving companies enough time to adjust procurement strategies or renegotiate with customers.

Industrial Transmission: Cost Pressure Amplified from PX to PTA to Polyester

PTA is the core intermediate in the polyester chain, linking upstream PX (paraxylene) to downstream polyester chips, filament, and staple fiber. The current price hike stems from tight PX supply — fluctuating international oil prices and maintenance shutdowns at some PX plants have raised feedstock costs.

For polyester plants, PTA accounts for over 70% of total costs. At 6,043 yuan/ton, the production cost of polyester chips is approaching 7,000 yuan/ton. Downstream weaving mills face weak terminal garment orders and sluggish domestic consumption. If polyester products cannot pass on higher costs, chemical fiber producers' gross margins will shrink significantly.

From a regional perspective, polyester production hubs in Xiaoshan, Shaoxing (Zhejiang) and Shengze (Jiangsu) are already seeing small and medium-sized mills reducing operating rates. These firms typically lack long-term contract pricing power and are more vulnerable during raw material upcycles.

Market Outlook: High in Short Term, Demand Recovery Key in Medium Term

Fundamentally, PTA is unlikely to see a sharp decline in the near term. On one hand, PX supply elasticity is limited; on the other, PTA social inventories are at moderate-low levels. However, upside is capped by downstream absorption capacity — if textile and apparel demand fails to recover in tandem, polyester mill production cuts will in turn weigh on PTA demand.

A key indicator: the current price is still 13% below the year's high of 6,932.90 yuan, meaning further upside is possible if PX supply tightens more or demand surprises. Conversely, if downstream polyester operating rates fall below 75%, PTA could retreat to the 5,800 yuan level.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - With PTA in the mid-to-high range, avoid large-scale stockpiling at current levels. Adopt a phased procurement strategy, covering 10-15 days of production needs to avoid building positions at the peak. - Monitor PX plant maintenance schedules and weekly PTA inventory data. If inventories rise for three consecutive weeks, slow down purchasing. - Negotiate short-term floating price contracts with suppliers (e.g., referencing daily average prices from CCF or Shangsheng She), reducing single-point negotiation risk.

For Textile Mills - When taking orders, include raw material price fluctuation clauses in contracts, stipulating that increases exceeding 5% be shared between both parties to avoid order losses from PTA hikes. - Raise polyester grey fabric quotes moderately to test market acceptance. Currently, end customers tolerate up to 5% increases; beyond that, concessions on delivery or payment terms may be needed. - Optimize product mix by reducing reliance on pure polyester. Increase the share of differentiated products (e.g., T/R blends, cationic-modified polyester), which have greater price elasticity and stronger cost-pass-through capability.
