PTA prices reached 6,043 yuan per ton in mid-July, up 3.78% from the beginning of the month and less than 900 yuan shy of the year's peak of 6,932 yuan. This price level signals that upstream cost pressure in the chemical fiber chain is accelerating downstream.
Looking at the annual price range, PTA is currently in the mid-to-high zone, with a low of 4,363 yuan, a high of 6,932 yuan, and a median of about 5,648 yuan. At 6,043 yuan, the price is nearly 7% above the median and has rebounded over 38% from the year's low. For polyester mills dependent on PTA, the raw material cost hike is now unavoidable.
Cost Transmission Path and Industry Response
As the core raw material for polyester filament and staple fiber, PTA price fluctuations propagate through the chain: PTA → polyester chips → polyester filament/staple → weaving → dyeing → garments. Polyester mills have diverged in procurement strategies: some are bargain-hunting for replenishment, while most maintain just-in-time buying due to unclear end-order visibility.
In weaving clusters like Shengze and Changxing, grey fabric inventories are at mid-to-high levels, and downstream dyeing plant utilization rates are below 70%. This suggests the weaving sector has limited appetite for higher-cost raw materials. If PTA continues to rise, mills may be forced to cut production or compress profit margins.
Supply-Demand Dynamics and Price Outlook
On the supply side, domestic PTA plant operating rates remain around 80%, with new capacity adding steadily. However, PX prices, influenced by international crude oil volatility, have shown a firming trend recently, providing cost support for PTA. Demand presents a pattern of 'stable domestic, pressured export': domestic textile and apparel retail data show positive growth, but destocking in European and US markets is slow, with export orders dominated by short-term, small-lot deals.
Overall, PTA is likely to fluctuate in the 5,800-6,200 yuan range in the near term. Unless crude oil prices drop sharply, PTA's price center will stay elevated. This raises the bar for downstream firms' cost control and order quotation capabilities.
