The spot price of PTA reached 6,043 yuan per ton on July 16, up 3.78% from the beginning of the month. Although still nearly 900 yuan below the year's high of 6,932 yuan, it has firmly surpassed the annual median of 5,648 yuan, suggesting a structural shift in the cost support logic for the polyester chain. Over the past 12 months, PTA prices have fluctuated from a low of 4,363 yuan to a high of 6,932 yuan, with the current level sitting in the mid-to-high range. The recent rally, with a slope steepening over three months, is driven not solely by crude oil but by tightening supply due to seasonal plant maintenance and improving fundamentals. The transmission to downstream products like polyester filament and staple fiber has been lagging, compressing processing margins. Weaving mills now face a narrowing procurement window, with inventory costs potentially rising 3%–5% by late July. In response, some medium-sized polyester plants in Shaoxing and Xiaoshan are shifting output toward differentiated products to defend margins. For fabric traders, PTA's role as the anchor price for chemical fibers means its upward move will gradually feed into autumn/winter order quotations, squeezing margins if brands resist price hikes. For procurement teams, locking in prices for Q3 conventional raw materials before end of July is advised, alongside monitoring PTA futures basis for hedging opportunities. Exporters should negotiate price adjustment clauses with overseas buyers and explore importing from South Korea or Taiwan if the domestic-foreign price gap widens.
