A company known for outdoor gear now sees its chip business account for over a third of total revenue, growing 25 times faster than its traditional segment. Toread's Q1 2026 report shows outdoor revenue of RMB 315 million, up 8.02% YoY, while chip revenue hit RMB 179 million, surging 206.92%. The dual-core strategy has moved from concept to numbers, but the key question is whether this growth is driven by consolidation or genuine technology synergy.
Chip Business: Consolidation Meets Domestic Substitution
The chip segment's surge is not entirely organic. In late 2025, Toread acquired 51% stakes in Betterlife and Shanghai Tongtu for a combined RMB 678 million, consolidating both from January 2026. Betterlife leads China's fingerprint sensor market and supplies touch controllers to major laptop brands, while Tongtu provides image and video processing IP to over 20 chip companies.
Financially, consolidation boosted short-term revenue, but the fact that recurring net profit grew 32.36% (vs. 14.44% reported net profit) suggests improving core profitability. This indicates the acquired assets are inherently profitable and integration is proceeding smoothly.
Technology Synergy: From Merger to Chemistry
The real test is whether the two businesses create tangible synergies. On June 17, Toread launched the Crest C3 smart exoskeleton, weighing just 1.8 kg with a 10:1 thrust-to-weight ratio, selling over 100 units on its first day through offline stores. The product's core technologies—lightweight design, high thrust ratio, and intelligent sensing—all come from the chip division.
This positions Toread differently from traditional outdoor brands or pure-play chip firms: it uses outdoor scenarios as application endpoints for chip technology, while leveraging chip capabilities to upgrade outdoor products. The company has built a full-stack chip product matrix covering 'sensing-interaction-display' and plans to extend into smart apparel and wearables. This closed loop is rare among A-share listed companies.
Capital Moves: RMB 1 Billion Placement Signals Commitment
On July 9, Toread's private placement plan passed Shenzhen Stock Exchange review, aiming to raise up to RMB 1.005 billion pending CSRC approval. This marks the sixth chip-related capital move since 2021, with total investment exceeding RMB 1 billion. The controlling shareholder's continued capital injection signals a shift from consolidation-driven scale expansion to technology-driven organic growth.
Technologically, Tongtu's full-stack data compression targets edge AI scenarios, addressing bandwidth and storage bottlenecks in large model deployment. In June, Tongtu partnered with Horizon Robotics to develop bandwidth compression for autonomous driving and robotics. The company is also exploring compression applications in data center transmission. These moves extend Toread's chip business beyond mature areas like fingerprint recognition into high-barrier AI infrastructure.
Shareholder Returns: Consistent Dividends Signal Confidence
Maintaining consecutive dividends during a transformation phase is uncommon. From 2023 to 2025, Toread paid cumulative dividends of RMB 38.93 million, exceeding 30% of its average annual net profit over the same period. The 2025 plan distributes RMB 0.01 per share, totaling about RMB 8.52 million.
While the amount is modest, three consecutive cash dividends convey two messages: operating cash flow supports both transformation and shareholder returns, and management is confident enough in the dual-core strategy to align interests with shareholders.
Risks and Outlook
Short-term uncertainties include: first, whether chip growth can sustain—consolidation benefits will fade in H2 2026, requiring organic orders and product launches to maintain momentum; second, whether the RMB 1 billion placement closes smoothly and how efficiently the proceeds are deployed—if technical routes fail to commercialize, ROA could suffer.
Longer term, the outdoor-chip synergy logic is rare but needs more tangible products like the smart exoskeleton to validate. If Toread can launch 2-3 market-impactful smart outdoor products in the next 12-18 months, its valuation could shift from 'consolidation premium' to 'synergy premium,' prompting a market repricing.
