The unplanned shutdown of Xinjiang Zhongtai's 1.2-million-ton PTA plant on July 1, which remains offline, is triggering a cascade of reactions across the polyester supply chain. From PTA itself to upstream PX and downstream polyester products, the supply-demand balance is being recalibrated.

Supply Deficit and Price Support

According to China Customs data, PTA capacity expansion has slowed in recent years. This 1.2-million-ton facility accounts for approximately 1.8% of national capacity, meaning about 100,000 tons of monthly supply has vanished. Industry data shows PTA inventories are already at moderate-to-low levels, and this reduction will intensify spot market tightness. In the futures market, near-month contract open interest has risen, with bullish funds betting on supply constraints. For buyers, this means near-term bargaining power is shrinking.

Uneven Transmission Across the Chain

The PTA shutdown creates clear headwinds for upstream PX, which relies heavily on PTA demand. However, it provides cost support for downstream polyester products. Polyester staple fiber, POY, DTY, and FDY all receive positive ratings, with raw material price expectations transmitting downstream. Notably, this transmission is uneven—staple fiber reacts fastest due to shorter mill inventory cycles, while filament products like POY and FDY show slower cost pass-through due to varying inventory strategies among weavers.

Industrial Cluster Responses and Inventory Games

Major weaving clusters like Keqiao and Shengze are adjusting raw material procurement. Some mills are increasing stockpiles ahead of price hikes, while others wait for clarity on the PTA restart. This divergence reflects the industry's acute sensitivity to cost volatility. Historically, unplanned PTA shutdowns last 2-4 weeks, but Xinjiang's logistics and energy challenges could extend the outage. If restart is delayed into August, it will intensify supply pressure during the peak summer polyester demand season.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Increase spot purchases of PTA and polyester raw materials in the near term to lock in current relatively low costs. - Monitor restart progress of the Xinjiang Zhongtai plant; if the outage extends to mid-August, reassess Q3 procurement budgets.

For Exporters - Proactively communicate with overseas clients about potential delivery and price adjustments due to PTA supply volatility. - Consider shifting some orders to recycled polyester or differentiated fibers to reduce dependency on a single raw material price.
