6000 yuan per ton is becoming the new anchor for spot PTA. On July 16, 2026, public transaction data showed that prime-grade PTA quotes in Suzhou and Changzhou, Jiangsu, concentrated in the 6000-6060 yuan/ton range, while quotes in Wuhan, Hubei, reached 6800 yuan/ton, a spread of 800 yuan. This regional divergence is not a short-term fluctuation but a reflection of deeper industrial restructuring.
Supply-Demand Logic Behind Price Divergence
Looking at specific quotes, supply competition in Jiangsu is fierce. Major brands such as Yisheng Dahua and Hengli Dalian have multiple quoting points in Suzhou, Changzhou, and Nantong. Yisheng Dahua quotes 6000 yuan/ton in Suzhou and 6050 yuan/ton in Changzhou, while Hengli Dalian quotes 6000-6060 yuan/ton in Suzhou. The price differences for the same brand across provinces highlight significant regional variations in inventory levels and downstream demand.
Quotes in Wuhan, Hubei, are notably higher. Wuhan Hengjiu Chemical quotes Yisheng Dahua products at 6800 yuan/ton, nearly 13% above the Jiangsu price for the same brand. This gap stems from slower polyester capacity expansion in central China relative to the east, coupled with sustained rigid demand from local textile enterprises, creating supply tightness that pushes prices up.
Transmission Effects on Downstream Textile Companies
As the core raw material for the polyester chain, PTA prices directly determine the cost of polyester filament yarn, polyester staple fiber, and other chemical fiber products. The current 6000 yuan/ton level in east China means that polyester plants are operating near the breakeven point for processing margins. If PTA stays at the 6000 yuan line, downstream weaving companies will face a double squeeze from high raw material costs and weak demand for end-use fabrics.
Regional price spreads offer arbitrage opportunities. Theoretically, sourcing PTA from Jiangsu and shipping it to Hubei, after deducting about 200-300 yuan/ton in freight costs, still leaves a margin of over 500 yuan. This is a direct temptation for traders with logistics capabilities. However, in practice, factors such as customer payment cycles, contract constraints, and regional market entry barriers must be considered.
Inventory and Procurement Rhythm
The distribution of public quotes shows that PTA inventory in Jiangsu is relatively ample, especially in Suzhou and Changzhou, where multiple traders quote the same brand products. This suggests that polyester plants in east China can keep raw material inventories low and adopt a just-in-time procurement strategy.
In contrast, Hubei quotes come from only one trader, and at a much higher price, indicating limited PTA circulation in the central market. Downstream companies there may need to bear higher raw material carrying costs. This imbalance is unlikely to change in the short term, as new PTA capacity projects are concentrated in coastal areas, leaving inland regions dependent on long-distance transport.
