Viscose staple fiber (VSF) prices are now firmly at a one-year high, with the benchmark price for 1.2D grade settling at 14,200 yuan per ton as of July 17, 2026, unchanged from the start of the month. This price coincides exactly with the highest level recorded over the past 12 months, indicating that sellers have pushed prices to their limit while buyers have adopted a wait-and-see approach.
The annual data shows that the lowest price over the period was 12,800 yuan per ton, the highest was 14,200 yuan, the median was 13,500 yuan, and the average was 13,252.51 yuan. The current price represents a 10.9% increase from the annual low, but the key issue is that it has stalled at the top with no further upward momentum for consecutive days. The industry interprets this as a 'high-level stalemate.'
Industry Logic Behind the High Price
The current high price is not an isolated event but the result of upstream cost transmission and downstream demand negotiation. On the cost side, dissolving pulp prices have remained firm over the past year, directly pushing up VSF production costs. Meanwhile, the expansion of domestic VSF capacity slowed in the second half of 2025, with some small and medium-sized producers suspending or reducing output due to environmental and raw material cost pressures, objectively reducing market supply. These two forces have jointly pushed prices to current levels.
The problem lies on the demand side. The downstream rayon yarn market performed modestly in Q2 2026, with the recovery in grey fabric and garment orders falling short of expectations. Facing VSF at 14,200 yuan per ton, downstream weaving mills have significantly reduced their purchasing willingness, adopting a 'buy-as-needed' strategy rather than building inventory. This 'upstream holding firm, downstream watching' dynamic has concentrated working capital pressure upstream.
One-Year Overshoot Signal and Market Expectations
Industry data systems have issued a 'one-year overshoot' warning for VSF 1.2D, meaning the current price is in a relatively high range compared to the annual average, posing a correction risk. For buyers, this signals a need to reassess locking strategies—chasing prices at current levels could lead to losses if a correction occurs.
Historically, VSF price cycles last 18 to 24 months. The current uptrend began in Q3 2025 and has run for about 12 months. If downstream demand fails to pick up significantly in Q3, prices are likely to consolidate near current levels or even correct slightly. However, if end-apparel exports surge due to Black Friday and Christmas orders, VSF prices could break above 14,200 yuan and open new upside.
