PTA prices have once again crossed the 6,000 yuan/ton mark and are consolidating at elevated levels. Industry data shows that on July 17, 2026, the PTA benchmark price stood at 6,012.25 yuan/ton, up 3.25% from the beginning of the month. This places the price in the upper-middle range of the past year, still about 920 yuan below the historical high of 6,932.90 yuan but 37% above the year's low of 4,363.25 yuan.
Price Position and Industry Signals
At 6,012.25 yuan/ton, PTA sits above the 12-month average of 5,396.97 yuan and the median of 5,648.08 yuan. The daily decline of 0.51% suggests that short-term upward momentum is weakening, and the market has entered a phase of high-level consolidation. For downstream polyester producers in clusters like Shengze, Changxing, and Xiaoshan, this price level provides strong cost support for polyester filament and staple fiber. Some weaving mills report raw material costs have increased by 5%-8% compared to the end of Q2, squeezing profit margins as fabric order prices lag behind.
Chain Transmission: From PTA to Fabric Procurement
As the top of the polyester chain, PTA price fluctuations cascade through polyester chips, filament yarn, weaving, dyeing, and finally to fabric. For markets like Keqiao and Nantong, which specialize in polyester taffeta, pongee, and oxford fabrics, rising raw material costs are forcing grey fabric prices to adjust upward. On the export front, combined pressure from yuan exchange rate fluctuations and rising input costs is making fabric quotations less competitive. Some Southeast Asian buyers are delaying orders or requesting renegotiation. However, with PTA still nearly 1,000 yuan below its all-time high, further sharp increases are unlikely unless crude oil spikes significantly.
Inventory Cycles and Procurement Timing
The annual price range shows PTA fluctuated by nearly 60%, from a low of 4,363.25 yuan to a high of 6,932.90 yuan. Such volatility demands flexible inventory management. With prices at mid-high levels and daily gains turning negative, market sentiment is shifting from bullish to cautious. For weaving mills with 15-20 days of raw material inventory, it is advisable to delay bulk purchases and wait for a pullback to the 5,800-5,900 yuan range. For urgent orders, small-batch, frequent purchases are recommended. Exporters should include price adjustment clauses in contracts to mitigate risk from raw material spikes.
