A new national standard is set to bring much-needed order to the upstream equipment sector of China's carbon fiber supply chain.
Standard Breakthrough: From Carbonization to Precursor, A Full-Chain Framework Emerges
The newly approved national standard, 'Terminology, Classification and Model Compilation Method for Complete Sets of Polyacrylonitrile Fiber Production Equipment,' will take effect in February 2027. This is China's first national standard in the field of carbon fiber precursor equipment, led by Zhejiang Jinggong Integrated Technology Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Huachuang Carbon Fiber Technology Co., Ltd. Previously, a similar standard for carbonization equipment, also led by Jinggong, came into effect in June 2025. With these two standards, the core production stages of carbon fiber—precursor and carbonization—now have unified equipment specifications, forming a preliminary full-chain standard system.
Precursor quality directly determines the mechanical properties of carbon fiber. For years, the domestic precursor equipment sector lacked unified terminology and classification, leading to chaotic naming conventions among different manufacturers. This caused significant communication costs and compatibility risks for end-users during production line design, equipment selection, and procurement. The new standard brings equipment for processes such as polymerization, spinning, drawing, drying, and solvent recovery under a single terminological and classification framework, removing a fundamental barrier to industrial collaboration.
Industry Impact: A Key Step Toward Efficiency and Cost Reduction
For carbon fiber producers, equipment standardization means lower procurement hurdles and higher production line compatibility. Previously, due to inconsistent naming and classification, equipment from different suppliers was difficult to compare directly, and production line upgrades often required high customization, driving up investment costs and commissioning periods. After the standard is implemented, model compilation rules will become more consistent, allowing buyers to conduct more efficient horizontal price comparisons and technical evaluations, thereby reducing equipment procurement costs.
At the industry level, a unified standard system helps accelerate the large-scale application of domestic equipment. Domestic carbon fiber equipment has long faced a 'technology exists, standards don't' dilemma, with downstream users preferring imported equipment due to concerns about compatibility and after-sales service. The implementation of these two national standards provides authoritative 'identity markers' for domestic equipment, reducing user hesitation and directly boosting the market share of local manufacturers.
Industry Trend: Accelerating Self-Reliance in the Full Industrial Chain
Carbon fiber is a strategic new material, and the autonomy of its entire industrial chain is crucial. This standard covers not just equipment naming, but the standardization of the entire precursor production process. This means that in the future, new production lines can be designed from the start according to a unified standard, reducing the risk of later modifications and thus accelerating capacity expansion.
The joint standard-setting model of Jinggong and Huachuang also reflects a shift among leading companies from simple equipment suppliers to industry standard-setters. This role upgrade will help these companies dominate the subsequent promotion of group and industry standards, further solidifying their first-mover advantage in core technologies like large-tow and high-performance PAN precursors and carbonization equipment. For buyers, choosing equipment suppliers that comply with national standards means stronger guarantees for long-term maintenance and technological upgrades.
