The price of fiber balls used in water treatment has entered an unusual period of stability in mid-July. Henan Kaijie's three specifications—30mm, 40mm, and 50mm diameters—are all quoted at 15,500 RMB per ton, unchanged for several weeks.
This price plateau, for buyers accustomed to commodity volatility, is more noteworthy than sharp swings. It often signals that the market is accumulating forces at an equilibrium point, awaiting the next variable to break the deadlock.
Dual Anchoring from Cost and Demand
The primary raw material for fiber balls is polyester staple fiber. Recently, the domestic polyester staple fiber market has experienced narrowed price fluctuations due to crude oil price oscillations and ample PTA supply, providing a stable cost base for downstream products like fiber balls.
Simultaneously, the water treatment industry has entered the traditional summer construction lull. Municipal wastewater plant upgrade projects were mostly tendered in Q2 and are now in construction and equipment installation phases, reducing concentrated procurement of filter media like fiber balls. The industrial wastewater sector continues operations but purchases are mainly for small replenishments, unable to generate large-scale orders.
This convergence of supply and demand has created the current "quiet period" for fiber ball prices. Notably, the 15,500 RMB/ton level is not a historical low; it sits at the midpoint of recent average prices, meaning producers maintain reasonable margins while buyers feel no significant cost pressure.
Regional Pricing and Channel Disparities
Although public quotes show uniform pricing for Henan Kaijie's three products, actual transactions reveal hidden differentials across regions and order volumes. In Zibo, Shandong, a major water treatment equipment distribution hub, actual transaction prices for bulk purchases (over 10 tons) are often 2% to 3% below the public quote.
- 30mm fiber balls: suitable for oily wastewater treatment, stable demand from refineries, limited bargaining room
- 40mm fiber balls: most versatile, high inventory turnover, dealers willing to offer discounts for faster cash recovery
- 50mm fiber balls: mainly for primary or coarse filtration, low order frequency but large per-order volume, highest price negotiation flexibility
These hidden discounts indicate that the market is not rigidly priced but involves fine-grained negotiation between buyers and sellers under a public benchmark.
Implications for Procurement Decisions
For small-to-medium water treatment engineering companies, the current price window offers an opportunity to reassess procurement strategies. Price stability reduces short-term default risk, facilitating planned batch purchases. If raw material costs later rise (e.g., due to PTA plant maintenance driving up polyester staple fiber prices), current prices could prove to be a temporary low.
