The start of Pakistan's 2026/27 cotton season has far exceeded industry expectations. As of July 15, national ginning mill arrivals reached 527,900 bales, up 77.3% from 297,751 bales in the same period last year, a net increase of 230,149 bales. This surge not only reverses the tight supply situation of previous quarters but also signals a capacity recovery in the upstream raw material segment of Pakistan's textile industry.
Regional Divergence: Sindh Leads, Punjab Steady
Sindh province showed the strongest performance, with arrivals jumping from 152,650 bales to 326,403 bales, an increase of 113.82%. The Sanghar region contributed the bulk of Sindh's growth with 280,393 bales, while Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, and Nawabshah also posted significant gains. This indicates that the dual effects of expanded planted area and improved yields are materializing in Sindh.
Punjab province recorded 201,497 bales, a 38.87% year-on-year increase. Although the growth rate is lower than Sindh's, its absolute volume still accounts for about 38% of the national total. Vehari led with 41,367 bales, followed by Dera Ghazi Khan (36,340 bales) and Khanewal (32,521 bales). Notably, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur saw declines, suggesting that some traditional growing areas have not fully recovered due to irrigation or variety issues.
Inventory Transmission: Unsold Stocks Rise, Reflecting Price Negotiation
Unsold stocks at ginning mills stood at 82,121 bales, up from 47,771 bales last year, an increase of about 72%. The pace of inventory accumulation is slightly slower than arrivals growth, indicating that downstream textile mills are actively purchasing, but some ginners may be waiting for higher offers. Malik Talat Sohail, Chairman of the Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) for Punjab, noted that the surge in arrivals will help ensure adequate raw material supply and support export activities—but continued inventory pressure could cap upside price potential for spot cotton.
For Chinese importers, the sharp increase in Pakistan cotton arrivals suggests that exportable volumes for the 2026/27 season are likely to expand. Pakistan cotton is typically low-to-medium grade, suitable for spinning coarse yarns and denim raw materials. If the price gap between domestic Chinese cotton and international cotton narrows, the cost advantage of Pakistan cotton will become more prominent.
Chain Transmission: Can Raw Material Ease Translate into Export Dividends?
Improved raw material supply directly benefits Pakistan's downstream textile processing sector. The textile industry accounts for about 60% of the country's total exports. In recent years, export competitiveness has been eroded by Bangladesh and Vietnam due to exchange rate fluctuations, rising energy costs, and cotton production declines. If the new season maintains its strong start and normal weather conditions prevail during the harvesting period, annual production could exceed 10 million bales, reducing reliance on imported cotton and stabilizing yarn costs.
However, two risk points warrant attention: First, Sindh's arrivals more than doubled year-on-year, partly due to a low base last year (only 150,000 bales in the same period of 2025). The actual recovery in planted area still needs to be verified by August-September data. Second, domestic inflation and electricity costs in Pakistan remain high. Whether spinning mills can improve margins depends on the pass-through of finished yarn prices.
Trade with China: Potential Volume vs. Quality Trade-off
China is a major buyer of Pakistan cotton and cotton yarn. In the first five months of 2026, China's imports of cotton yarn from Pakistan fell about 8% year-on-year, partly due to high prices and supply instability. With the surge in new cotton arrivals, Pakistan's cotton yarn export offers may soften, especially for regular grades like C32S and C40S.
But quality remains a concern. Pakistan cotton is known for variable micronaire and high trash content. Increased arrivals do not guarantee a higher proportion of premium grades. Chinese spinners should strengthen batch testing to avoid strength issues caused by high impurity rates.
