Domestic PTA spot benchmark prices are approaching the 6,000 yuan per ton threshold. On July 20, public industry data showed the PTA benchmark at 5,985.91 yuan per ton, a 2.8% increase from the beginning of the month (5,823 yuan). This price sits at the mid-to-high end of the past year's range, having rebounded over 37% from the year's low of 4,363 yuan.
Price Signals and Market Sentiment
As the core raw material for the polyester chain, PTA price fluctuations directly impact polyester filament, polyester staple fiber, and downstream fabric segments. The current price of 5,985 yuan is about 14% below the year's high of 6,932 yuan but significantly above the annual average of 5,407 yuan. This suggests that PTA prices have experienced a 'down then up' trajectory over the past 12 months, with the recent acceleration warranting attention.
Structurally, the current price is about 6% above the median value of 5,648 yuan and has remained elevated for consecutive days. For polyester mills, raw material costs account for over 70% of total expenses. Every 100 yuan increase in PTA directly raises production costs for downstream polyester products by approximately 70-80 yuan. This cost pass-through typically has a 1-2 week lag but will eventually be reflected in intermediate product prices such as polyester chips and filament.
Industry Impact: Transmission from Upstream to Downstream
The PTA price hike creates a classic 'upstream feast, downstream famine' scenario. Upstream PX (paraxylene) producers benefit from wider margins, while midstream polyester processors face cost compression. Smaller, less integrated polyester mills may be forced to reduce operating rates or raise prices reactively.
In the weaving sector, major clusters such as Shengze, Changxing, and Xiuzhou are already feeling the pressure. Polyester grey fabric prices typically adjust 2-3 weeks after raw material changes, and due to order constraints, increases often fail to fully cover cost hikes. For mills producing commodity items like polyester taffeta and pongee, profit margins are narrowing.
On the foreign trade front, the current period bridges the traditional off-season and autumn/winter order placement. Sustained high PTA prices will raise export fabric quotes, potentially undermining the price competitiveness of Chinese textiles against low-cost producers like Bangladesh and Vietnam.
