The hygiene and maternal-infant products industry is at a critical juncture of shifting from old to new growth drivers. While single-point technological breakthroughs in bio-based absorbent materials, ultra-thin cores, and fine-denier nonwovens have emerged in recent years, the industry remains mired in overcapacity and market involution. A major industry conference held in Shanghai on July 16 sent a clear signal: the next phase of competition will no longer be about individual technologies, but about the ability to innovate across the entire chain—from raw materials and equipment to channels.
From Single-Point Breakthroughs to System Integration
Li Guimei, president of the China Nonwovens & Industrial Textiles Association (CNITA), noted at the conference that technological innovation during the '14th Five-Year Plan' period has moved from single-point breakthroughs to a stage of systematic improvement. This assessment is driven by industry pain points: Zhao Miye, head of Trützschler's China marketing department, highlighted key issues in hot-air production lines—uneven web surfaces, cumbersome cleaning of curved plates, long downtime, and high raw material waste. These problems cannot be solved by optimizing a single link alone; they require systematic upgrades of both equipment and processes.
Trützschler's new generation carding machine NCX/NCTX, launched in 2025, and its hot-air oven technology designed specifically for hygiene materials, are products of this systemic thinking. They simultaneously improve carding capacity, output, and machine uptime, while enabling gentle product handling and significantly enhancing finished product loft and consistency. This means that for buyers, equipment selection should no longer focus on single indicators but must evaluate overall line synergy efficiency.
Flushable and Glue-Free: Two Pillars of Green Transformation
Sustainability has become the core driver of the global wet wipes market. Teng Guangxing, senior sales manager at Andritz (China), shared that companies are accelerating their shift toward bio-based natural fiber solutions. Its wet-laid flushable solution uses bio-based raw materials such as wood pulp and viscose, with an annual capacity of 16,000 tons. The neXformer dual-diffuser system optimizes fiber dispersion at high speeds, significantly improving fabric uniformity.
Meanwhile, the 'four-dimensional intelligent manufacturing' system proposed by Futian Seiko identifies glue-free technology as one of its core breakthroughs. Glue-free production not only reduces chemical usage but also simplifies downstream processes, benefiting both environmental protection and cost control. These two main lines indicate that green transformation has moved from concept to actionable technical solutions, with far-reaching implications for upstream fiber suppliers and downstream brands.
Channel Restructuring: The Rise of Instant Retail and Content E-commerce
Demographic shifts and changing consumption habits are reshaping sales channels for hygiene and maternal-infant products. Kang Shiqing, from Douyin's maternal-infant e-commerce operations, pointed out that the consumption habits of the new generation of parents are accelerating toward content-driven, scenario-based shopping, with short videos and livestreaming becoming core decision-making arenas. Liang Zi, an expert from Xiaohongshu's maternal-infant sector, emphasized that the key to maternal-infant marketing is no longer exposure volume, but whether the right content can reach the right consumer group at the right time.
More noteworthy is the rise of instant retail models. In a roundtable discussion, representatives from brands and retail channels engaged in heated debate on whether instant retail will become a mainstream channel. The integration of warehouse and store models, as well as opportunities for Chinese maternal-infant companies to go global, became focal points. For factories and foreign trade enterprises, this means traditional B2B order models are being disrupted by D2C and O2O, requiring more diversified and flexible channel strategies.
Smart Equipment: A Weapon for Breaking Through in the Inventory Era
In an era of overcapacity and inventory, smart equipment has become key for companies to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Shanghai Songchuan Fengguan's intelligent packaging solution for the back-end of hygiene product lines achieves a production speed of 1,500 pieces per minute, while using buckle machines and hot-melt cutting technology to solve problems like product skew and packaging waste. Companies such as Zhengzhou Textile Machinery, Guangzhou Sipulei, and Reifenhäuser revealed during the roundtable that spunlace, hot-air, and wet wipes production equipment are iterating toward higher speeds, lower energy consumption, and stronger compatibility.
For factories, investment in smart equipment is no longer an option but a necessity for survival. Companies still relying on old production lines with low automation levels will face accelerated elimination under the dual pressure of cost and quality.
Standard Upgrade: Implementation of Production Environment Evaluation Specifications
The control of production environments for disposable hygiene products is shifting from corporate self-discipline to industry standardization. The group standard 'Specification for Production Environment Evaluation of Disposable Hygiene Products Enterprises,' led by CNITA, has been implemented, setting clear guidelines for production environment control. This means compliance costs will rise, but it also builds higher competitive barriers for leading companies.
