This month in Switzerland, three textile companies—Rieter, Säntis Textiles, and Valvan—jointly launched a franchise model called Recycling Powerhouse, aiming to industrialize, standardize, and scale textile recycling. The first blueprint franchise operation is scheduled to launch in early 2025, marking the first time a complete technical solution for textile recycling is offered through a chain franchise model.
Background
The biggest bottleneck in textile recycling is not technology but the lack of standardization and scale. Globally, approximately 92 million tons of textile waste are generated annually, yet less than 1% is closed-loop recycled into high-quality fibers. Most recyclers operate on a small-batch, manual sorting basis, unable to meet brand demands for stable supply and certified quality. Recycling Powerhouse addresses this pain point by packaging Rieter's spinning equipment, Säntis Textiles' recycling processes, and Valvan's automated sorting technology into a replicable "factory blueprint" through franchising.
This model lowers the technical barrier for entry—traditional textile-producing regions can start producing certified recycled yarn without in-house R&D by simply purchasing a franchise license. For brand buyers, it means traceable, verifiable supply chain nodes. Switzerland as the launch base is no coincidence: the country has a mature textile machinery industry and strict environmental regulations, and Rieter, as a global leader in spinning equipment, has proven the adaptability of its machines for recycled fiber processing.
Industry Impact
The launch of Recycling Powerhouse will directly impact the current pricing system for recycled yarn. Certified recycled cotton yarn currently costs 30%–50% more than virgin cotton yarn, mainly due to low production volumes and high sorting costs. If the franchise model achieves scale, unit costs could drop by 15%–20%, narrowing the price gap with virgin materials. This is particularly important for fast-fashion brands facing compliance pressure from the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which requires textiles to contain a certain percentage of recycled fibers by 2030.
From an industrial cluster perspective, garment-producing countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam may be among the first beneficiaries. For upstream chemical fiber companies, this is a potential threat.
