Textile waste recycling is accelerating from lab concepts to commercial shelves. The first denim collection launched by Circ and H&M features TENCEL™ REFIBRA™ technology, which decomposes post-consumer cotton-blend fabrics into cellulose for re-spinning. This is not simple green marketing; it means the most stubborn problem of denim—closed-loop recycling of blended fabrics—now has a scalable sample.
Technological Breakthrough and Commercial Milestone
REFIBRA™ technology is fundamentally a fiber-to-fiber conversion. Traditional denim is mostly cotton blended with elastane, making separation costly; most ends up in landfills or downcycled. Circ uses a solvent process to extract cellulose from cotton blends, re-spin it into Lyocell fibers, and then blend with TENCEL™ brand virgin Lyocell to produce new denim. This directly reduces water and chemical consumption from virgin cotton farming and viscose production.
H&M’s purchasing volume sends a strong signal to upstream supply chains. The launch means Circ’s recycling technology has passed H&M’s supplier audits, small-batch trials, and mass-production quality checks—no longer a pilot-level existence. For denim fabric mills, this implies that the recycled fiber blend ratio in future orders could gradually rise from the current 5%-15% to over 30%.
Ripple Effects on Upstream Supply Chain
On the raw material side, this collaboration directly impacts demand for virgin cotton and ordinary viscose staple fiber. China Customs data shows that from January to June 2024, the average export price of domestic pure cotton denim fell about 4% year-on-year, while exports of regenerated cellulose fibers (Lyocell, Modal) grew over 12%. The Circ-H&M case will accelerate brand specifications for recycled Lyocell, pushing domestic chemical fiber plants to adjust production line ratios.
Dyeing and finishing also face changes. Recycled Lyocell’s dyeing properties differ from ordinary viscose—uptake rate, colorfastness, and fiber shrinkage all require process re-tuning. For dyeing mills in Shaoxing, Foshan, and Shishi, which have long focused on cotton printing and dyeing, this means new sampling and equipment adjustment costs, but also a potential door to high-value brand orders.
Balancing Cost and Sustainability
Currently, recycled Lyocell production costs are still 20%-30% higher than ordinary viscose, mainly due to waste sorting and solvent recovery. But Circ’s process has a key advantage: it doesn’t require complete separation of cotton and polyester; it dissolves the cellulose part, leaving polyester residue for other uses. This lowers the purity requirement for blended waste, theoretically expanding the source of recyclable feedstock.
For buyers, the real decision point is not the eco-label but the fact that when the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation mandates recycled content in textiles, suppliers that have pre-adapted to Circ-like technologies will gain export access advantages. This H&M collaboration is essentially paving the way for the post-2026 regulatory environment.
