Following the start of operations at the Holma Spinning Mill in Forsa this May, ReSpin has officially joined the Swedish Textile Machinery Association (TMAS), becoming the latest addition to the country's circular textile innovation chain. These moves signal that Sweden's textile recycling has moved beyond experimentation into a systematic, industrialized phase.

TMAS, the core industry body for Swedish textile technology, covers the entire value chain from spinning, weaving, and dyeing to recycling equipment. ReSpin's membership adds a new player specializing in closed-loop textile processing. Meanwhile, the Holma Spinning Mill focuses on converting textile waste into high-quality yarn. Together, these developments indicate that Sweden is building a complete loop from waste collection, sorting, and regeneration to new fabric manufacturing.
Policy and Market Drivers
Sweden's push for circular textiles is underpinned by the EU's Textile Strategy, which mandates separate collection of textiles by 2025. Sweden has already moved ahead of this timeline. At the same time, strong consumer demand for sustainable products provides a market base for recycled textiles. For Chinese textile firms, this means entry barriers to the European market are rising—future exports may face stricter recycled content requirements or carbon footprint tracking.
Technology Pathways and Industry Impact
The technology route represented by ReSpin and Holma combines mechanical recycling for pure cotton or blends and chemical recycling for synthetics like polyester. This contrasts with China's current reliance on downcycling methods. China generates about 20 million tons of textile waste annually, yet less than 20% is recycled, mostly into lower-value products. Sweden's model shows that high-value recycling requires equipment synergy across the value chain—precisely the value TMAS provides as an industry association.
