Sappi has officially joined the ZDHC Foundation's Roadmap to Zero Program, becoming another key supplier in the fiber and paper sector to commit to this framework. This means one more critical node in the chemical compliance chain from pulp to textile fiber.

Launched in 2011, the ZDHC Roadmap to Zero Program has attracted over 160 brands, suppliers, and chemical manufacturers. Its core goal is to achieve zero discharge of hazardous chemicals in the textile and leather industries by 2025. Sappi's participation extends this standard to its dissolving pulp production, a raw material widely used for viscose, lyocell, and other regenerated cellulose fibers.
For the textile industry, chemical management at the raw material stage has been a weak link. Most brands and mills focus compliance pressure on dyeing and finishing, but chemical use in upstream pulp and fiber production often lacks transparency. By committing to ZDHC's MRSL (Manufacturing Restricted Substances List), Sappi aims to reduce hazardous chemical use at the source.
Industry Impact
What does this mean for downstream buyers and brands? First, the 'trace depth' of supply chain compliance will increase by one layer. Previously, brands required fabric mills to provide ZDHC declarations, which could only trace back to yarn or fiber mills. Now, if fiber mills themselves are ZDHC members, the compliance chain can extend further to pulp suppliers. This reduces the risk of detecting restricted substances in final products.
Second, for buyers of regenerated cellulose fibers like viscose and lyocell, this is a clear signal: chemical management at the raw material stage is moving from 'voluntary disclosure' to 'system certification.' As one of the world's major dissolving pulp producers, Sappi's move may prompt other pulp suppliers to follow. In the future, suppliers not joining similar frameworks may lose priority in brand procurement lists.
From a cost perspective, deepening chemical compliance may push up raw material prices in the short term. Implementing MRSL requires process modifications and increased testing frequency, costs that will eventually be passed on to fiber and fabric prices.
