A new global survey by Cotton Incorporated reveals that over 60% of respondents are actively reducing their purchases of synthetic-fiber clothing due to worries about microplastic release during washing. This figure rises to 74% among consumers aged 18 to 34.
Shifting Preferences at the Point of Sale
The survey further indicates that 71% of global consumers perceive natural fibers such as cotton, linen, and wool as more environmentally friendly than synthetics. This perception is translating into action: the proportion of shoppers who explicitly prioritize cotton garments in the past 12 months has risen 12 percentage points compared to two years ago, reaching 58%. Notably, this preference is no longer confined to traditional cotton products like underwear and T-shirts. In sportswear and outdoor apparel categories, the share of consumers willing to pay a premium for products with a high natural-fiber content has exceeded 40% for the first time.
Signals Traveling Up the Supply Chain
Demand-side shifts are already rippling upstream. Several fast-fashion brands have recently publicly adjusted the cotton-to-polyester ratio in their core lines, with some pledging to raise natural-fiber content to over 70% by 2025. Textile Circle’s editorial team notes from publicly available industry data that in the third quarter of 2023, the average export price of Chinese cotton yarn rose 5.2% year-on-year, while the price of abundant polyester staple fiber fell 3.8%. This narrowing price gap further weakens synthetics’ cost advantage, making natural fibers more competitive in procurement decisions.
Real Impact on Industrial Clusters
China’s major cotton textile belts—Nantong in Jiangsu, Weiqiao in Shandong, and Tianmen in Hubei—have all reported a rebound in orders for high-count cotton yarn. Local textile associations indicate that in the first quarter of 2024, operating rates for 40-count and above combed cotton yarn in these areas rose by 8 percentage points compared to the same period last year. In contrast, inventory turnover days for polyester filament yarn in synthetic-fiber hubs like Shaoxing (Zhejiang) and Changle (Fujian) have lengthened by an average of four days. This suggests that the revival of natural fibers is not a conceptual hype but a tangible reallocation of production capacity.
Recalibrating Development and Procurement Strategies
For brands and mills, the preference shift driven by microplastic anxiety requires more than simply swapping out fabric composition sheets. First, natural fibers still lag in performance attributes such as moisture wicking and quick drying for activewear; simply increasing cotton content could lead to product performance degradation. Second, sustainability certifications for cotton supply chains (e.g., BCI, organic cotton standards) remain somewhat chaotic, and brands must guard against greenwashing risks. Finally, cotton prices are volatile due to climate and geopolitical factors, meaning long-term commitments to natural-fiber ratios require more flexible inventory management and hedging tools.
