It directly targets the raw materials behind high-performance synthetic fibers, flame-retardant fabrics, conductive yarns, and smart textiles.

The NSF Regional Innovation Engines program is a top-level design to reshore manufacturing and secure critical supply chains. The Crossroads Engine focuses on the full chain—mining, purification, and downstream R&D—of rare earths, lithium, cobalt, and other critical minerals. Missouri S&T's strength in mineral engineering makes it the technical anchor.
For textiles, the direct link is that these minerals feed into high-performance fibers (aramid, carbon fiber, UHMWPE) and functional coatings (antistatic, radiation-proof, flame-retardant). If the U.S. achieves self-sufficiency and technology lockdown on critical minerals, the global functional fiber supply chain faces a major reshuffle.

The first transmission effect is on costs.
