The cotton textile industry in Ningxia and Gansu is carving a path distinctly different from Xinjiang. According to the latest field data from the China Cotton Textile Association, Ningxia's total spinning capacity has reached nearly 1.4 million spindles, forming two major clusters in Helan and Wuzhong. However, local enterprises have completely shifted from pure cotton yarn to multi-component blended yarn. This structural transformation signals that western China's textile sector is no longer a mere shadow of Xinjiang's capacity but is actively seeking differentiated survival space.
The Cost and Market Dynamics of East-West Collaboration
Ningxia's cotton textile competitiveness rests on clear cost advantages. Industrial electricity prices hover around 0.45 yuan/kWh, slightly higher than Xinjiang but still attractive compared to eastern China. Labor costs, at a monthly wage of 5,000 yuan for an eight-hour shift, are coupled with a sufficient supply of young workers, including some ethnic minorities. These factor endowments perfectly match the relocation needs of eastern textile enterprises.
Companies surveyed, such as Huanian (Ningxia) Textile Technology Co., Ltd. and Shizuishan Shengjinyuan Textile Technology Co., Ltd., all have eastern capital or technology backgrounds. The former operates 530,000 spindles of high-end intelligent spinning capacity, equipped with online quality control systems, and has built a multi-category portfolio including colored spun yarn, differentiated yarn, and high-count pure cotton yarn. The latter has completely transformed from pure cotton yarn to multi-component blended yarn. This 'eastern technology + western resources' model is reshaping the landscape of western China's textile industrial belts.
Blended Products as the Core of Differentiation
Unlike Xinjiang's cotton textile sector, which is dominated by pure cotton yarn and faces intense homogenized competition, enterprises in Gansu and Ningxia are proactively shifting their product mix toward high-value-added, differentiated, and blended products. Shengjinyuan Textile now produces exclusively multi-component blended yarns with clear functional and differentiating features. Huanian Textile is also accelerating its transition from conventional varieties to high-value-added, blended products. This means Gansu-Ningxia cotton textiles no longer directly compete with Xinjiang in the pure cotton yarn market but instead target niche segments such as functional fabrics, colored spinning, and blended yarns.
For downstream buyers, this shift offers more diversified sourcing options. Blended yarns often outperform pure cotton in wrinkle resistance, moisture wicking, and antibacterial properties, while maintaining cost control. Although the total capacity in Gansu-Ningxia is relatively small, their flexibility and speed of transformation enable them to quickly respond to small-batch, multi-variety orders.
Upgrading of Carding Equipment Supply Chain
Field data from Jinlun Card Clothing (Baiyin) Co., Ltd. reveals the deepening of the textile supply chain in the region. As a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jinlun Card Clothing (Jiangsu), the Baiyin plant operates a full production line for elastic flat card clothing, covering high-, mid-, and low-end series of carding equipment. It collaborates with Northwestern Polytechnical University on R&D for card clothing materials and processes. This localized manufacturing capability for upstream carding equipment effectively reduces maintenance costs and procurement lead times for local spinning mills, further strengthening the overall competitiveness of the industrial belt.
