The viscose staple fiber (VSF) 1.2D market is experiencing an unusual period of sustained high consolidation. According to industry data, the benchmark price stood at 14,200 yuan/ton on July 24, 2026, unchanged from the start of the month, but this level represents the 12-month high. Over the past year, prices have climbed from a low of 12,800 yuan/ton to the current peak, a cumulative increase of 1,400 yuan/ton (over 10%). The annual average stands at 13,276.61 yuan/ton, meaning current prices are nearly 7% above the yearly mean, placing them in an overbought zone.

Supply-Demand Dynamics Behind High Prices

The high price plateau is driven by tightened supply and rising raw material costs. Dissolving pulp, the key input for VSF, has seen sustained price increases internationally, pushing up production costs. Meanwhile, domestic VSF producers have implemented capacity maintenance or production cuts due to stricter environmental regulations, reducing supply elasticity. National Bureau of Statistics data shows that capacity utilization in the chemical fiber industry fell by about 2 percentage points year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with VSF being a notable contributor.

Demand, however, has not expanded proportionally. Downstream spinners report limited order growth for VSF-based yarns, with some small and medium-sized weaving mills operating at less than 70% capacity. This "supply contraction, stable demand" scenario supports high prices but also risks inventory buildup.

Downstream Pressure: Spinning and Weaving Squeezed

High VSF prices are being transmitted downstream, but inefficiently. Spinners report that VSF now accounts for over 65% of total yarn production costs, yet yarn selling prices have risen only modestly due to buyer resistance from fabric mills and apparel brands. For example, ring-spun R30S viscose yarn prices rose only about 500 yuan/ton in Q2 2026, far below the over 1,000 yuan/ton increase in VSF. This has compressed spinning margins to near breakeven, forcing some mills to reduce operating rates or switch to blended products. Weaving mills face similar challenges, with gray fabric prices lagging and inventory turnover extending to over 25 days, nearly a week longer than last year.

Regional Responses: Keqiao vs. Shengze

China's two major textile clusters, Keqiao in Zhejiang and Shengze in Jiangsu, are adopting contrasting strategies. Keqiao, with high VSF demand for home textiles and apparel fabrics, favors long-term contracts to lock in prices. Large fabric makers there have signed six-month procurement agreements with VSF suppliers at 14,000-14,200 yuan/ton. In contrast, Shengze, producing lightweight fabrics like faux silk and chiffon, uses smaller, more frequent spot purchases, only restocking during price dips. This divergence reflects different cost tolerance levels and suggests that if VSF prices rise further, Shengze may see demand shrink first.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - With prices at highs, stagger purchases rather than buying in bulk to mitigate correction risk. - Monitor dissolving pulp futures and VSF producer operating rates as leading indicators for short-term decisions. - For stable demand, consider 3-6 month fixed-price supply contracts to lock in current levels.

For Exporters - Include raw material price adjustment clauses in export orders for viscose yarns or fabrics to avoid loss from further price hikes. - Track dissolving pulp and VSF import prices in Southeast Asia; any international price weakness could trigger domestic corrections. - Use forward forex hedging to manage dual risks from raw material and currency fluctuations.
