Shandong's cotton yarn spot market showed clear price stratification in late July. Prices for 21S high-grade ring-spun knitting yarn ranged from 22,800 to 24,200 RMB/ton, while 32S of the same specification ranged from 24,500 to 26,400 RMB/ton. The maximum spread for a single count exceeded 1,400 RMB/ton, reflecting not just raw material cost differences but also accelerating divergence in customer positioning and market strategies among mills.

The Logic Behind Price Divergence

The pricing differences among major Shandong suppliers merit close examination. For 21S yarn, Guanxing Textile quoted 22,800 RMB/ton while Guanjie Textile quoted 24,200 RMB/ton, a gap of 1,400 RMB/ton. For 32S, the gap was even wider: Shandong Hongyang Chemical quoted 26,400 RMB/ton, 1,900 RMB/ton above Guanxing's same specification. This divergence is not accidental.

Guanxing Textile and Runfengda Textile, both at the low end of the range, likely benefit from more stable cotton procurement channels or more efficient spinning cost control. The higher quotes from Guanjie and Shandong Hongyang may reflect brand premiums, tighter quality management, or a focus on premium customers. For buyers, lower prices do not necessarily mean lower quality, but batch consistency must be verified.

Signals from the Narrowing Count Spread

Traditionally, 32S commands a 2,000-3,000 RMB/ton premium over 21S due to higher processing costs. However, in this data, Guanxing's 32S is only 1,700 RMB/ton above its 21S, and Runfengda's spread is just 1,600 RMB/ton. This narrowing trend deserves attention.

One explanation is intensified competition in 32S, with some mills squeezing margins to gain market share. Another is that raw material costs for 21S (e.g., higher-grade cotton) have risen, compressing the spread. For weavers, the relative cost-efficiency of 32S is improving. If product specifications allow, substituting some 21S with 32S could enhance fabric hand feel and weight.

Regional Supply Landscape

All reporting mills are in Shandong Province, mostly in Weifang City. Weifang, a key cotton textile cluster, makes its pricing a bellwether for northern China's textile market. Notably, Weifang Jinyi Yarn and Weifang Runfengda Textile quoted identical prices (21S at 23,000, 32S at 24,600 RMB/ton), possibly reflecting a regional pricing consensus or shared raw material procurement.

In contrast, Guanxing Textile (Liaocheng) and Guanjie Textile showed more independent pricing. Buyers should consider the specific sub-cluster of each supplier, as logistics costs (50-100 RMB/ton) and environmental policies vary within the same province, affecting final delivered prices.

Practical Implications for Downstream Buyers

The current cotton yarn market is characterized by ample supply and cautious demand. As staple knitting yarns, 21S and 32S price movements directly impact the cost of T-shirts, underwear, and sweatshirts.

For Procurement Managers - Build a multi-supplier comparison mechanism: Use the current wide price window to test low-quote suppliers with sample orders and small batches before scaling up. - Evaluate 32S substitution: Given the narrowing spread, assess downstream customer receptivity to higher-count fabrics and consider guiding product upgrades. - Optimize logistics: Prioritize suppliers in Weifang or neighboring counties to reduce transport costs and lead times.

For Foreign Trade Companies - Leverage price stratification: Match different overseas clients' price sensitivity with appropriate yarn suppliers to improve order competitiveness. - Specify count tolerance in contracts: 32S yarn may range from 30S to 34S actual count. Clearly define tolerance and testing standards to avoid port disputes. - Monitor RMB exchange rate impact on imported cotton costs: If imported cotton becomes more expensive due to exchange rate movements, the value advantage of domestic low-price yarn will further strengthen.
