PTA spot price fell to around 5,830 RMB/ton on July 27, breaking through the 5,850 RMB/ton mark for the first time since mid-June. The direct trigger is the retreat of geopolitical premium in crude oil, but the deeper issue is the polyester chain's diminishing ability to absorb high costs.

Basis Structure Shift: From Strong Support to Concession

At East China main ports, July-delivery cargoes were quoted at a premium of 120-135 RMB/ton over the September futures contract, with bids at around 120 RMB/ton premium. Actual transactions concentrated at the 120 RMB/ton level. For August deliveries, the offered premium narrowed to 100-120 RMB/ton, with bids at only 80-100 RMB/ton. The basis has been weakening from above 150 RMB/ton in June, indicating that spot holders are no longer insisting on high prices but are making small concessions to facilitate deals.

This basis change directly impacts polyester plants' procurement decisions. When the spot premium shrinks from 150 to 120 RMB/ton, buyers save 30 RMB per ton of feedstock. For large polyester plants consuming over 500 tons per day, daily cost savings can exceed 15,000 RMB. However, amid weak downstream orders, most factories have not increased purchase volumes despite the narrower basis, maintaining only just-in-time replenishment.

Cost Support Logic Loosening: The Crude Oil-PX Transmission Chain

The PTA price decline is directly driven by upstream factors. After geopolitical risks eased, the premium in international crude oil prices retreated, with Brent crude falling from $82/bbl in mid-July to around $78/bbl. As the direct feedstock for PTA, PX prices weakened correspondingly, with the naphtha-PX spread compressing from $400/ton to $370/ton.

For the PTA industry, current processing margins are in the 350-400 RMB/ton range, a moderately low level. If crude oil prices continue to fall, PTA processing margins will face further compression, potentially forcing some high-cost plants to reduce operating rates. On the other hand, PTA social inventory is at a year-to-date low of approximately 2.2 million tons, which to some extent limits downside price risk. A short-term tug-of-war is forming around the 5,800 RMB/ton level.

Downstream Polyester Sector's Absorption Capacity: Stocking Willingness vs. Inventory Pressure

The PTA price decline is transmitting to the polyester segment. POY 150D/48F mainstream quotes have fallen from 7,600 RMB/ton at the beginning of the month to 7,400 RMB/ton, and FDY 150D/96F from 7,900 to 7,700 RMB/ton. Polyester chip prices have followed suit, with semi-dull chip quotes dropping from 7,050 to 6,900 RMB/ton.

In terms of inventory, as of July 25, POY inventory stood at about 14 days, FDY at 18 days, and DTY at 22 days, all at moderately high levels. Weaving mill operating rates remain around 72%, but new order intake is unsatisfactory, and grey fabric inventories are still accumulating. This suggests that downstream mills lack the motivation to actively restock and can only respond to raw material price fluctuations with hand-to-mouth purchasing.

Regional Market Response: Thin Trading in East China, Caution in South China

In East China, the main PTA producing and consuming region, market sentiment on July 27 was generally subdued. Early morning quotes once dipped to 5,800 RMB/ton before recovering to 5,830 RMB/ton as some traders made opportunistic purchases. In South China, PTA prices also weakened, with offers around 5,900 RMB/ton, but downstream inquiries were scarce and actual transactions limited.

From an industrial cluster perspective, polyester plants in major filament yarn producing areas such as Shengze, Changxing, and Xiaoshan generally adopted a wait-and-see approach, maintaining feedstock inventories at a safe level of 7-10 days without large-scale restocking despite the price drop. This reflects downstream expectations of further price declines, believing that current prices have not yet reached the bottom.

Practical Recommendations

For Procurement Managers - With the basis in a narrowing channel, keep spot procurement at just-in-time levels and avoid building large positions when the basis is above 120 RMB/ton. Consider moderate restocking only after the basis narrows further to below 100 RMB/ton. - Monitor the linkage between PX prices and crude oil. If Brent crude falls below $75/bbl, PTA prices may test the 5,700 RMB/ton support level. At that point, a phased accumulation strategy can be initiated. - The basis for August cargoes is 80-100 RMB/ton, a 20 RMB/ton discount to July cargoes. Prioritize purchasing near-month cargoes to reduce storage and financing costs.

For Export Enterprises - For export orders, adopt a floating basis pricing model that links PTA prices to downstream polyester filament yarn quotes, reducing the impact of raw material price volatility on order profitability. - Monitor the impact of RMB exchange rate fluctuations on imported PX costs. RMB depreciation will raise PTA production costs and may provide support to export prices. - When signing long-term contracts with upstream suppliers, include price adjustment clauses stipulating that both parties will renegotiate quotes when PTA spot prices fluctuate by more than 200 RMB/ton.
