After nearly six decades of global monopoly by a single overseas player, China's flash-spun nonwovens industry is accelerating its rewrite of the rules through standardization. The second technical discussion for the national standard "Flash-Spun Nonwovens," held in Nantong, Jiangsu, in July 2026, marks a shift from framework building to substantive breakthroughs.

The Industrial Logic Behind Standard Setting

The meeting was led by Xiamen Dangsheng New Materials, with over 20 entities including Jiangsu Qingyun, Kingfa Technology, Minshida, and Donghua University. After two sessions, a draft standard was formed. From an industry perspective, this means the sector has moved from "being able to produce" to "producing with rules."

Flash-spun nonwovens are irreplaceable in medical, pharmaceutical, and military applications due to their ultra-lightweight, high barrier, and strong toughness. Without a national product standard, domestic materials long faced a "no-standard" dilemma in market access, procurement acceptance, and quality grading, hindering the pace of import substitution.

From Technological Breakthrough to Rule Dominance

Dangsheng achieved commercial mass production in 2019, becoming the world's second and China's first company to master the full flash-spinning technology, directly breaking the nearly six-decade monopoly. This breakthrough earned the company the 2020 Shanghai Science and Technology Progress First Prize and the 2022 CTES Technical Invention First Prize, giving Chinese firms the technical capital to participate in rule-making.

The drafting team systematically collected full-spec product data and surveyed diverse application needs—from sterilization adaptability in medical packaging to extreme environment tolerance in military gear. This "from data to scenarios" approach ensures the draft standard is more aligned with industrial reality than a simple copy of foreign standards.

Ripple Effects Upstream and Downstream

For upstream raw material suppliers, a unified standard clarifies performance indicators for specialized resins, guiding R&D and reducing trial costs. For downstream buyers—especially in medical, pharmaceutical, and military sectors—the standard provides a clear quality benchmark, reducing disputes and safety risks from inconsistent specs.

Notably, the MIIT and NDRC previously called for advancing flash-spinning technology in their guidance for high-quality development of technical textiles. This standard-setting is a key policy implementation step, providing institutional support for domestic materials to move from "usable" to "good" to "large-scale replacement."

Standard Competition Behind Industrial Game

The national standard for flash-spun nonwovens is essentially a contest for industrial discourse power. With core technology and mass production capability in hand, the next competitive frontier is standard-setting. Without a timely national standard, downstream markets may still rely on overseas product systems, leaving domestic materials passive in benchmarking, certification, and international trade.

From a global perspective, China's standard-setting is not closed. The drafting team includes end users like XinHua Medical and CGN Research Institute, with academic support from Donghua University. This "industry-academia-research-user" synergy makes the standard more inclusive and forward-looking.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Monitor the release of the draft standard for comment; pre-evaluate supplier compliance to avoid post-implementation risks - Include transitional clauses in contracts referencing the "Flash-Spun Nonwovens" national standard (draft) to buffer compliance changes - For critical applications like medical packaging, conduct joint testing with suppliers before the standard is finalized

For Manufacturers - Immediately benchmark existing product lines against the draft standard's testing methods and grading system to identify technical gaps - Collaborate with research institutions like Donghua University to provide feedback during the comment period, aiming for favorable grading criteria - Proactively pursue certifications for high-barrier applications such as medical device packaging and military protection to capture market opportunities post-standard
