8,800 CNY/ton. That was the latest price for 150D/96F semi-dull premium-grade polyester FDY quoted on July 27 by two major Zhejiang producers: Rongsheng Petrochemical and Juxing Chemical Fiber. One number, two origins, and behind it lies a collective wait-and-see stance across the polyester filament yarn chain entering Q3.
Price Anchor and Cost Logic
The 8,800 CNY/ton level is no coincidence. Based on current spot PTA and MEG prices, the full production cost of polyester FDY falls roughly between 8,500 and 8,700 CNY/ton. Both companies quoting 8,800 CNY/ton implies processing margins have been squeezed to a razor-thin 100–300 CNY/ton—near or below break-even.
In past pricing patterns, market leaders often used price spreads to guide the market. But this time, the alignment between Rongsheng and Juxing signals a collective aversion to price wars. For buyers, the message is clear: room for further downward negotiation in the short term is extremely limited.
Transmission Effects Across Industrial Clusters
Shaoxing and Hangzhou in Zhejiang are among China's most concentrated polyester filament yarn production hubs. Quotes from these regions directly influence downstream weaving clusters in Shengze and Nantong. At 8,800 CNY/ton, FDY locks greige fabric costs for standard products like pongee and taffeta into a defined range.
If FDY prices hold above 8,800 CNY/ton, downstream weavers will shift from 'hand-to-mouth' buying to opportunistic restocking. Currently, loom utilization in Shengze hovers around 70%, with orders dominated by short runs and small lots, keeping restocking appetite weak.
Q3 Outlook Amid Supply-Demand Tug-of-War
On the supply side, Q3 marks the traditional maintenance season for domestic polyester plants. Rongsheng has already scheduled maintenance for some units, which will reduce available market volumes. However, demand recovery remains uncertain. Export orders have yet to show a clear upturn due to overseas inventory cycles, while domestic demand faces potential disruption from summer heat-related power rationing on weaving operations.
Whether 8,800 CNY/ton becomes a Q3 floor depends on two variables: first, whether PTA feedstock prices rise further due to tight PX supply; second, whether weaving mills kick off pre-season stocking for 'Golden September and Silver October' by late August. If both factors align, FDY prices could breach 9,000 CNY/ton before September.
Market Sentiment and Operational Timing
Polyester FDY inventory currently sits at a moderately low level, with mills under little pressure to offload. However, trader-level destocking is slow, with some small and medium traders discounting to move goods, creating localized price disturbances.
For textile enterprises, the key priority is matching cash flow with inventory levels. With the price direction still unclear, controlling raw material days on hand and shortening procurement cycles is a prudent approach.
