The CFR China PTA import price dropped by $16/ton to $831/ton on July 24. While the move appears modest, its signal value is amplified by the current polyester chain's high inventories and weak demand—import cost relief means the ceiling for domestic spot PTA is lowering, and futures markets have already priced in the shift.
Cost Transmission: From Import to Spot
PTA is the core raw material in the polyester chain. A $16/ton drop in import price translates to roughly RMB 115/ton in cost savings for domestic producers, reducing raw material procurement expenses. Domestic suppliers typically follow import prices to remain competitive, so polyester plants can expect wider negotiation margins in spot purchases.
However, cost-side relief does not guarantee profit retention. The polyester chain's bottleneck lies in demand—weaving and dyeing operations are running at low utilization, with end-user orders mainly short-cycle and urgent. Polyester mills' finished goods inventory pressure remains high. The cost dividend from cheaper PTA may be offset by inventory markdown losses at the polyester stage.
Futures-Spot Linkage: Forward Pricing
On July 22, the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange's PTA main contract (2609) closed at RMB 5,890/ton, up RMB 114/ton. This apparent divergence—import prices falling while futures rose—reflects market expectation gaps. The July 22 rally was largely a technical rebound from oversold levels. With import quotes weakening on July 23-24, futures face substantive bearish pressure. Open interest in PTA futures has been declining, indicating weak bullish conviction. If spot prices confirm a downtrend, the contract may give back recent gains and test lower levels.
Regional Responses: Price Differentials and Procurement Pace
PTA consumption is concentrated in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Fujian clusters. The impact of import price cuts varies by region:
- Zhejiang: Spot PTA in Ningbo and Shaoxing is tightly linked to futures. Traders may increase destocking, widening spot discounts.
- Jiangsu: Polyester mills in Shengze and Nantong rely more on term contracts, so spot volatility has limited short-term impact, but buyers will have stronger bargaining power in new contract negotiations.
- Fujian: Local PTA capacity is concentrated, reducing the impact of import changes on regional pricing, but import substitution will still indirectly lower average market prices.
Polyester plants should defer spot purchases until import quotes stabilize. Historical data show that when import prices drop more than $15/ton in a single day, there is a >60% probability of further declines in the next 3-5 trading days.
