On July 27, ICE cotton futures for December delivery settled at 80.88 cents per pound, up 0.9 cent or 1.1%, driven by technical buying after Friday's correction and a slightly weaker US dollar. A StoneX risk management advisor noted that the market is testing key support levels after four consecutive days of gains earlier last week, followed by a more than 1.5% drop on Friday.
US Crop Conditions Deteriorate
The USDA's weekly crop progress report showed that as of July 26, the US cotton good-to-excellent rating stood at only 46%, marginally up from 45% the previous week but far below last year's 55%. Squaring reached 81% and setting bolls hit 45%, both near the five-year average. Despite normal growth progress, the poor condition of the plants raises concerns about final yields and quality. For major importers like China and Vietnam, the stability of new-crop US supply is now in question.
Brazil's Output Outlook Weakens
Brazil, the world's second-largest cotton exporter, is also facing a less optimistic production outlook. StoneX forecasted 2026/27 Brazilian cotton output at 3.83 million tonnes, down 1.5% year-on-year. Although planted area is expected to expand, potential yield damage from El Niño weather patterns is being factored in. The reduction in Brazil will partially offset US supply gaps, but global ending stocks may tighten further.
Short-Term Bounce vs. Medium-Term Pressures
Earlier last week, ICE cotton rallied for four consecutive sessions, supported by higher crude oil, stronger grains, and signals of robust Chinese demand. However, weak export sales data and a stronger US dollar on Friday erased those gains. Whether the 80-cent level can hold will depend on upcoming macroeconomic data and actual Chinese buying pace.
Spot Market Lags
The Cotlook A Index on July 27 was 89.10 cents per pound, down 125 points, indicating that the spot market has not fully followed the futures rebound. This reflects spinners' cautious attitude toward high-priced raw materials. With no clear recovery in end-user demand, upside potential remains limited, and the 80-85 cent range is likely to be the core trading zone in the short term.
