The Chinese yuan has been trading in a narrow band of 6.75-6.80 for nearly three weeks, gradually eroding profit margins for textile exporters. On July 28, 2026, the onshore yuan closed at 6.7674 against the USD, unchanged from the previous day. The PBOC set the midpoint at 6.7928, up 17 pips, signaling a managed stability. Meanwhile, the central bank conducted 305.5 billion yuan in 7-day reverse repos at a 1.40% rate, net injecting 52.5 billion yuan after accounting for maturities. This dual move aims to maintain exchange rate stability while injecting liquidity into the banking system. For textile exporters, however, the narrow fluctuation locks in settlement gains. Compared to early 2026 levels near 6.90, the yuan has appreciated about 1.9%. A textile firm with $50 million in annual exports could lose up to 1.65 million yuan in settlement income if forced to convert at 6.76 instead of 6.80. Industrial clusters in Keqiao, Shengze, and Nantong report that exporters are shortening quote validity to 15 days and adding currency fluctuation clauses in contracts. However, small and medium enterprises have a forward hedging coverage rate below 30%, exposing them to hidden losses. The PBOC's accommodative stance, with the 1.40% repo rate and net liquidity injection, lowers financing costs but may attract carry trades, further strengthening the yuan. In the first half of 2026, textile exports grew 4% year-on-year, but profits rose only 1.2%, with exchange rate being the main drag. Exporters are advised to raise forward hedging to over 50%, include currency sharing clauses, and monitor PBOC operations. For importers of fabrics or machinery, the current yuan purchasing power offers an opportunity to lock in lower costs for raw materials and capital goods, and to negotiate yuan-denominated contracts.
