PTA Settlement Price Lands High, Cost Pressure Surges Along Polyester Chain
Yisheng Petrochemical, a core PTA producer in China, set its July contract settlement price at 5,980 yuan per ton, 90 yuan above the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange's main contract 2609 close of 5,890 yuan. While the spread is modest, it sends a clear signal to downstream buyers already operating on thin margins.
Background
As one of the largest PTA producers, Yisheng's monthly settlement is a benchmark for the industry. This July price not only exceeds the futures price but also the market's expected range of 5,900-5,950 yuan. Spot PTA prices had shown signs of recovery in late June, and this settlement reinforces that trend.
PTA accounts for over 60% of polyester staple fiber production costs and 55%-65% for POY, DTY, and FDY. A 100 yuan rise in PTA adds 60-65 yuan to staple fiber costs and 55-65 yuan to filament costs. However, the downstream weaving market is in a traditional off-season, with high grey fabric inventories and weak apparel orders. Upstream price hikes directly squeeze polyester producers' margins.
Industry Impact
The sentiment scores reflect this divergence: PTA scores a positive 1, while downstream products score only 0.5 each. PTA producers benefit from higher margins, but polyester mills face a dual squeeze of rising costs and slack demand.
In Jiangsu and Zhejiang, many small polyester factories are near breakeven. If PTA stays high and weavers resist price hikes, production cuts or maintenance shutdowns may rise. The 90 yuan futures discount offers hedging opportunities for traders and buyers to lock in costs.
