6,020 yuan per ton. That is Hengli Petrochemical's July PTA contract settlement price, 130 yuan higher than the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange's main PTA 2609 contract closing price of 5,890 yuan on July 22. This spot-to-futures premium signals that upstream producers are more optimistic about near-term supply-demand dynamics than the futures market, and points to a likely upward shift in the Q3 chemical fiber raw material cost center.

Cost Pass-Through: From PTA to Polyester Variants

PTA is the core intermediate in the polyester chain. Hengli's settlement price increase directly raises production costs for polyester staple fiber, POY, DTY, and FDY. For polyester staple fiber, the main 2609 contract closed at 7,478 yuan per ton on July 22, with PTA accounting for 60-70% of costs. The settlement price hike adds roughly 80 yuan per ton in costs—a modest amount, but enough to shift breakeven points in an already thin-margin industry.

Polyester filament yarn varieties face similar pressure. POY, DTY, and FDY all have PTA cost shares between 65% and 75%, meaning the settlement increase adds 85-95 yuan per ton in production costs. For volume-driven filament yarn producers, if downstream weaving demand fails to recover in tandem, passing these costs along will be difficult.

Industrial Belt Reactions: Weaving Sector's Wait-and-See Stance

Weaving enterprises in major polyester filament consuming regions such as Shaoxing and Xiaoshan in Zhejiang, and Shengze and Nantong in Jiangsu, have recently adopted a just-in-time procurement strategy. After the PTA settlement price was announced, some traders attempted small price increases, but downstream grey fabric and finished fabric markets showed limited acceptance. China's National Bureau of Statistics public data shows that fixed asset investment growth in the textile industry slowed in the first half of 2026, while terminal apparel export growth fell to single digits, indicating no strong demand rebound.

This means the cost pressure from PTA price hikes is largely borne by midstream polyester plants. If the futures market fails to follow the spot premium, polyester processors' processing margins will narrow further. Industry public data shows that the average operating rate of polyester plants in mid-July dropped to 88% from 92% in June, with some firms actively reducing loads to hedge against raw material price risks.

Price Outlook and Operational Suggestions

Looking at the long-short scores, PTA itself scores 1 (bullish), while all polyester variants score 0.5 (neutral-bullish), indicating market disagreement on the strength of cost pass-through. On the supply side, major producers like Hengli and Yisheng have limited maintenance plans, so Q3 output is expected to remain high. On the demand side, if polyester operating rates continue to decline, PTA destocking may slow, capping upside price potential.

For buyers, the current spot premium over futures makes hedging via futures relatively expensive. It is advisable to monitor basis changes around the August contract delivery period. If the spot premium narrows, consider establishing long positions in the futures market to lock in raw material costs.

For Buyers - Closely track the basis of the main PTA contract; when the spot premium narrows to within 50 yuan, consider building raw material inventory in batches via the futures market - Negotiate cost-linked clauses with suppliers using the PTA settlement price as the adjustment benchmark to avoid bearing raw material volatility alone

For Exporters - For fixed-price orders, assess the impact of raw material price increases on gross margins; if necessary, negotiate price adjustment mechanisms with clients - Monitor the impact of RMB exchange rate fluctuations on imported PTA substitutes; if PTA remains high, compare the cost-effectiveness of imported PX or MEG to optimize the raw material mix
