A company known for adhesive tapes is trying to carve a niche in the electronic materials market with a 300 million yuan investment. Yongguan New Materials recently signed an agreement with the Dongxiang District government in Jiangxi to build a production line with an annual capacity of 2,000 tons of electronic-grade fiberglass fabric. While this figure may seem modest, in the highly precision-demanding niche of electronic-grade fiberglass fabric, it is enough to prompt a reassessment of the supply chain landscape.
Background
Electronic-grade fiberglass fabric is a core reinforcing material for copper-clad laminates (CCL), directly determining the insulation performance and dimensional stability of printed circuit boards. With the explosion in demand for high-frequency and high-speed signal transmission in 5G base stations, data center switches, and automotive electronics, the market for low-dielectric-constant, low-loss electronic-grade fiberglass fabric is rapidly growing. Yongguan's 300 million yuan investment targets this structural gap.
Notably, Yongguan is no stranger to the electronic materials field. Over the past 20 years, the company has accumulated core technologies in precision weaving, sizing, tension control, and surface treatment from its fiberglass tape and cloth-based tape production, which can be directly transferred to the production of electronic-grade fiberglass fabric. This logic of technology reuse provides a shorter path to overcoming process bottlenecks that would otherwise require years of exploration.
The project is located in Dongxiang, where Yongguan has operated for 14 years. The local government has promised comprehensive support in land, labor, and energy, clearly positioning new materials as a core track. For such electronic material projects requiring stable power and clean production environments, local industrial supporting capabilities are often more decisive than land costs alone.
Industry Impact
From an industry-wide perspective, the electronic-grade fiberglass fabric market has long been dominated by a few Taiwanese and Japanese companies. While the capacity share of mainland Chinese companies is increasing, there remains significant room for import substitution in high-end products. Yongguan's entry means another competitor in the critical electronic material supply chain.
For downstream CCL manufacturers, an increase in domestic suppliers means greater procurement options. Given the volatile prices of fiberglass fabric over the past two years, a stable domestic supply source can help smooth costs. However, it should be noted that the certification cycle for electronic-grade fiberglass fabric typically lasts 6 to 12 months, meaning there is a ramp-up period from production launch to batch delivery.
From Yongguan's strategic perspective, this investment is a typical 'capability extension.' While the tape business provides stable cash flow, its gross margin ceiling is obvious. Electronic-grade fiberglass fabric is a specialty industrial textile with unit prices and added value several times higher than ordinary industrial fabric. Once customer certification is achieved, it can bring long-term, stable profit increments.
