A tape giant with billions in annual revenue is betting 300 million yuan on a small county in central China to crack the high-end materials market. Yongguan New Material has signed an agreement with the Dongxiang district government in Jiangxi to build a production line for 2000 tons of electronic-grade glass fiber fabric annually. While this capacity is modest compared to industry leaders, it marks a strategic pivot upstream for the company.
From Tape to Electronic Fabric: Process Synergy and Value Leap
Yongguan's core business is tape, especially cloth-based and fiberglass tape. These products require precision weaving, sizing, tension control, and surface treatment—exactly the skills needed for electronic glass fiber fabric. The company is not starting from scratch but extending its existing technology tree. Margins on electronic fabric are significantly higher than on commodity fiberglass cloth used in tape, as it directly serves the copper-clad laminate (CCL) and PCB industries.
Demand Drivers: 5G and Automotive Electronics
The global electronics industry is undergoing structural upgrades. Automotive electronics demand high-frequency, high-speed signal transmission; 5G/6G base stations require low dielectric constant materials; data center switches need high-layer-count PCBs. All these trends push up demand for electronic glass fabric. Chinese customs data show import prices for electronic fabric have been rising, indicating a supply gap in high-end products. Yongguan is targeting this gap.
Why Dongxiang? The Industrial Gravity of a Central County
Dongxiang is not a random choice. Yongguan has operated there for 14 years, with existing production bases. The local government has promised full support in land, labor, and energy, focusing on building a new materials cluster. For Yongguan, Dongxiang offers mature infrastructure, stable labor, and lower operating costs. This move also reflects a broader shift of electronics materials manufacturing from the coastal Yangtze and Pearl River deltas to central China, where Jiangxi is emerging as a new hub.
Challenges: Capacity Absorption and Technical Ramp-Up
The 2000-ton annual capacity will likely serve in-house use and nearby customers initially. Yongguan itself consumes large volumes of fiberglass fabric for its tape products, so internal absorption can reduce external dependency and improve supply chain stability. The real challenge lies in consistently producing high-end electronic fabric that meets IPC standards and securing certification from CCL manufacturers. This certification process typically takes 6 to 12 months and will determine the project's success.
