The polyester staple fiber (PSF) market is currently experiencing a typical "wait-and-see" phase. According to industry data released on July 29, the benchmark price of PSF stood at 7,498.33 yuan/ton, up 1.07% from the beginning of the month but down 0.46% from the previous day. This dual movement reveals a market lacking clear direction.
Current Price Status: Mid-Range Hovering with Narrowing Volatility
From an annual perspective, the current price sits at the mid-range of the year's price band. Over the past 12 months (July 29, 2025, to July 29, 2026), PSF prices hit a low of 6,267.17 yuan/ton and a high of 8,426.02 yuan/ton, with a median of 7,346.6 yuan/ton. The current price of 7,498.33 yuan/ton is slightly above the median but 927.69 yuan below the top and 1,231.16 yuan above the bottom.
Notably, the 12-month average price is 7,021.68 yuan/ton, meaning the current price is about 6.8% above the average. This suggests that for downstream buyers, the current price level is not cheap. For mills, this price means margins are being squeezed, especially for those without locked-in low-cost raw materials.
The Tug-of-War Between Cost and Demand
PSF pricing is fundamentally driven by two variables: upstream raw material costs and downstream textile demand.
On the cost side, PTA and MEG are the main raw materials for PSF. Recent fluctuations in international crude oil prices have pushed up the cost center of the petrochemical chain, providing bottom-line support for PSF prices. The annual bottom difference of 1,231.16 yuan is a quantitative reflection of this support.
However, demand has not provided positive signals. Orders in downstream sectors such as spinning, weaving, and nonwovens remain weak overall, and the recovery of end-consumer markets is slow. This means that while costs are pushing prices up, the lack of demand makes price increases unsustainable. The 0.46% drop on July 29 is a direct market response to weak demand.
Transmission Effects on Industrial Clusters
PSF price fluctuations quickly ripple through the supply chain to major industrial clusters.
- For chemical fiber clusters like Shengze, Changxing, and Xiaoshan, PSF is a key intermediate. At the current mid-range price, upstream mills need flexible inventory strategies—neither hoarding on bullish expectations nor panic-selling on short-term dips.
- For downstream weaving and home textile clusters like Nantong and Keqiao, mid-range price volatility means shorter procurement windows. Companies need to track price changes more frequently rather than relying on quarterly or monthly purchasing plans.
- Export-oriented companies face additional exchange rate risks. Significant fluctuations in the RMB exchange rate would amplify the import-export price spread of PSF, affecting profit calculations for foreign trade orders.
Short-Term Outlook: Waiting for a Catalyst
The core contradiction in the current market is: cost support exists, but demand lacks momentum. Under this scenario, prices are likely to continue oscillating in the 7,000–7,800 yuan/ton range until a variable breaks the balance.
Potential catalysts include:
- Significant swings in upstream raw material prices (e.g., geopolitical events affecting crude oil)
- Centralized restocking demand from downstream textiles (e.g., the "Golden September and Silver October" peak season)
- Policy changes such as export tax rebate adjustments or environmental production curbs
For industry participants, the key task at this stage is not to bet on direction but to manage risk and maintain flexible procurement.
