At 5993.34 yuan per ton on July 29, 2026, China's domestic PTA spot benchmark price reflects a 2.93% increase from the start of the month but a slight 0.06% decline day-on-day, signaling a potential plateau. Over the past 12 months, PTA has swung violently from a low of 4363 yuan/ton to a high of 6932 yuan/ton, an amplitude exceeding 58%. The current level sits in the mid-to-high range of that annual band.
This price zone carries direct implications for downstream polyester and textile mills, as cost pressures begin to migrate from upstream petrochemicals to intermediate processing stages.
Cost and Margin: PTA's Squeezed Position
As a petrochemical intermediate, PTA's cost floor is dictated by upstream PX, while its demand strength hinges on polyester plant operating rates. At 5993 yuan/ton, the price is about 940 yuan/ton below the annual peak but 1630 yuan/ton above the trough. Compared to the annual average of 5438 yuan/ton, the current premium stands at roughly 10.2%, indicating that PTA producers are enjoying relatively healthy processing margins.
However, sustaining this margin depends on two factors: stable international crude oil and PX supply, and the ability of downstream polyester mills to absorb and pass on higher raw material costs. The 0.06% daily decline suggests the market lacks conviction for further upside.
Downstream Transmission: Stress Test for Polyester and Weaving
For every 100 yuan/ton increase in PTA, the theoretical cost of polyester filament yarn rises by about 85 yuan/ton. The current 170 yuan/ton monthly PTA gain implies a cost hike of roughly 145 yuan/ton for polyester yarn. If end-use fabric orders cannot be repriced accordingly, polyester margins will be squeezed.
During the PTA trough of 4363 yuan/ton in late 2025, polyester mills enjoyed a significant raw material dividend. That advantage has now largely evaporated. For weaving clusters such as Keqiao and Shengze, the pressure to adjust grey fabric quotations is mounting.
Supply-Demand Fundamentals: Inventory and Operating Rates
PTA's mid-to-high price level reflects a rebalancing of supply and demand. On one hand, planned maintenance at several PTA plants in Q2 tightened supply. On the other, polyester operating rates remained elevated, generating steady demand. Yet the current price stands about 6% above the annual median of 5648 yuan/ton, and further upside requires stronger fundamental support.
If polyester mills cut operating rates due to margin erosion, PTA demand will weaken, potentially pulling prices back toward the median. Conversely, if PX costs rise further due to crude oil volatility, cost-push inflation could sustain the rally.
