The price of cotton yarn 32S is testing the profit margins of the mid-stream textile chain. As of July 29, 2026, the benchmark price stood at 24,675 CNY/ton, down 0.2% from the start of the month, yet still hovering near its one-year high. For fabric mills, weaving enterprises, and garment buyers, this means cost pressure on raw materials will not ease in the short term and may further transmit downstream due to inventory strategy adjustments.
Supply-Demand Dynamics Behind High Prices
Over the past 12 months, cotton yarn 32S has experienced a clear V-shaped recovery. The lowest point of 23,175 CNY/ton occurred in late July 2025, while the highest of 24,875 CNY/ton was reached around June 2026. The current price of 24,675 CNY is only 200 CNY below the peak and 1,500 CNY above the trough, with an annual average of 23,890 CNY. This spread reveals two key signals: the cotton yarn market has fully transitioned from last year's downturn to a high-level phase, and while upside potential is narrowing, downside risk is equally limited.
Feedback from industrial clusters in Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu indicates that high raw cotton costs have been a persistent factor pushing up 32S yarn processing costs since Q2. Spot prices of Xinjiang cotton remained firm during the same period, directly lifting yarn costs. At the same time, downstream gray fabric and garment orders did not shrink significantly during the traditional summer off-season, with replenishment demand from fast-fashion brands supporting yarn shipments. This combination of cost-push and demand resilience is the core reason for sustained high prices.
Transmission Effects on Mid- and Downstream Procurement
The high price level presents a dilemma for weaving enterprises: lock in current prices to secure supply, or wait for a potential correction and risk stockouts. Public data shows the daily change in cotton yarn 32S was only -0.20%, indicating narrow fluctuation with no clear downtrend. This means that if buyers continue to wait, they may face the risk of prices moving toward the annual peak of 24,875 CNY.
For fabric traders, high prices also mean increased capital costs. For a single batch of 10 tons of 32S yarn, the current value is about 247,000 CNY, 15,000 CNY higher than the low point a year ago. Given the difficulty of raising end-product prices, this cost can only be absorbed by compressing gross margins or optimizing inventory turnover.
