PTA prices have fluctuated widely in the first half of the year and now stand near the 6,000 yuan/ton mark again. According to industry public data, the PTA benchmark price on July 29 was 5,993.34 yuan/ton, up 2.93% from the beginning of the month but still 13.5% lower than the year's peak of 6,932.90 yuan/ton. The current level is in the mid-to-high range of the one-year price band, with a buffer of 1,630 yuan/ton to the historical low of 4,363.25 yuan/ton.

What does this price level imply? In the polyester chain, PTA serves as the core intermediate, influenced both by upstream PX cost support and downstream polyester and weaving demand elasticity. The current mid-range oscillation essentially reflects a tug-of-war between upstream cost support and downstream demand weakness.

Dual Squeeze from Cost and Demand

From a cost perspective, the PTA price floor has risen by over 1,600 yuan/ton from a year ago, indicating a higher overall cost base for crude oil and PX. However, the current price is nearly 940 yuan/ton below the year's peak, suggesting that the cost-driven momentum is fading. The one-year average PTA price is 5,438.17 yuan/ton, and the current price is about 10% above that average, meaning the industry remains profitable but with significantly narrower margins than in the first half.

Pressure from the demand side is more direct. Downstream polyester mills in July generally faced high inventories and low cash flow, with some filament varieties approaching breakeven. The situation is even worse in weaving: operating rates in major weaving clusters like Shengze and Nantong declined slightly in late July, with grey fabric inventories rising above 30 days. This means downstream PTA purchases are mainly for immediate needs, with speculative restocking demand nearly absent.

Regional Responses: Divergent Transmission from Keqiao to Changle

Different industrial clusters show distinct reactions to PTA price volatility. In Keqiao, a printing and dyeing hub, terminal garment orders have not shown the expected seasonal recovery, leading to low acceptance of high-priced raw materials. Dyeing mills have generally shortened their stocking cycles to 5-7 days. In contrast, in polyester clusters like Changle and Xiaoshan, mills are trying to support prices through production cuts, with some factories' contract execution rates for PTA falling below 80%.

This regional divergence reflects an uneven distribution of profits across the chain. Upstream PX-PTA segments can still maintain some profit, while downstream weaving and dyeing segments face a dual squeeze from costs and demand, with profit margins compressed to historical lows.

Price Expectation Adjustment and Procurement Strategy

From a volatility perspective, the current mid-range oscillation around 6,000 yuan/ton may become the norm for the second half of the year. The spread between the year's high and low exceeds 2,500 yuan/ton, and the current price is only about 6% above the midpoint of 5,648.08 yuan/ton, suggesting the market is seeking a new equilibrium.

For buyers, this level is neither a time to chase highs nor to bottom-fish. The key variables are the pace of downstream polyester inventory destocking and the recovery of terminal textile and apparel export orders. If the traditional peak season in August-September materializes, PTA prices could recover toward 6,500 yuan/ton; conversely, if demand remains weak, prices could fall to around 5,500 yuan/ton.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Maintain a 15-20 day safety stock at current levels to avoid inventory impairment from price fluctuations. - Monitor downstream polyester operating rates: if they fall below 85%, consider reducing raw material inventory cycles. - Use futures tools to lock in forward procurement costs, focusing on the spread between October contracts and spot prices.

For Weaving Mills - Strictly control grey fabric inventory, keeping turnover days within 25 to avoid capital tie-up. - Adjust product mix toward differentiated, high-value-added fabrics to reduce reliance on standard varieties. - Establish flexible pricing mechanisms with upstream polyester mills, such as monthly average settlement or deferred pricing, to spread price risk.
