Nylon POY settled at 14,000 CNY/ton in late July 2026, precisely at the midpoint of its 12-month trading range. While the figure alone is unremarkable, the annual spread—from 11,300 to 16,950 CNY/ton, a gap of 5,650 CNY—reveals a fragile equilibrium between upstream cost support and downstream demand weakness.
The Anchoring Effect of the Mid-Price
Annual data shows the average nylon POY price over the past year was 12,889.62 CNY/ton, meaning the current price is about 8.6% above that average. Most of the year, prices traded below today's level, with the bottom (11,300) occurring in H2 2025 and the top (16,950) likely tied to a restocking wave in early 2026.
At 14,000, the price sits just 0.9% below the median of 14,125. This 'quasi-median' status offers no clear directional signal—neither a panic-buying opportunity nor a chase-up trigger.
A Cold Equilibrium in the Supply Chain
The sideways movement reflects a tug-of-war between caprolactam cost support and weak downstream weaving and apparel demand. Caprolactam, the key feedstock, remains elevated due to international benzene prices, providing a floor for nylon POY.
On the demand side, water-jet loom utilization in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces hovered at 65%-70% in Q2 2026, 5-8 percentage points below normal seasonal levels. Apparel brands' destocking efforts have been slow, limiting incremental demand for nylon filament yarn. This 'cost-push, demand-pull' deadlock is the underlying reason for the price plateau.
Divergent Procurement and Inventory Strategies
For mills with long-term contracts, 14,000 CNY/ton locks raw material costs near the annual average, preserving stable margins. But for SMEs relying on spot purchases, this price offers little safety margin—if benzene prices spike, nylon POY could quickly break above 15,000, squeezing already thin processing margins.
From an inventory perspective, the current mid-range level is unsuitable for large-scale hoarding (a 17% downside risk to the top) or a zero-stock strategy (a 19% upside risk to the bottom). A prudent approach is to maintain 1-2 months of turnover stock and hedge with futures or forward contracts.
