A company known for adhesive tapes is betting 300 million yuan on electronic-grade glass fiber cloth in inland Jiangxi. Yongguan New Material's project with Dongxiang District, Fuzhou City, plans an annual capacity of 2,000 tons. While the investment is modest compared to giant chemical projects, it represents a precise positioning in the niche of electronic glass fiber cloth, a critical reinforcement material for copper-clad laminates (CCL).
The global high-end electronic cloth market remains dominated by Japanese firms like Nittobo and Asahi Kasei. Few domestic players can consistently produce low-Dk and high-frequency cloth. Yongguan's entry is not about scale but precision.
Process Migration: From Tape Weaving to Electronic Cloth
Yongguan has over two decades of experience in glass fiber tape and cloth-based tape, accumulating expertise in precision weaving, sizing, and tension control. These skills are directly transferable to electronic cloth, where uniform warp/weft density and surface flatness are paramount. Chairman Lv Xinmin stated the company will leverage its fiber processing and surface treatment know-how to support electronic cloth production. This suggests Yongguan is not starting from scratch but iterating mature processes toward higher precision.
However, electronic cloth requires desizing and chemical treatment in clean environments far stricter than industrial fabrics. Yongguan's existing lines may need retrofitting. From signing to mass production typically takes 18-24 months; timely launch by 2026 depends on infrastructure progress and import equipment lead times.
Dongxiang's Calculus: Land for Clusters, Clusters for Upgrading
Dongxiang is not a traditional electronic cloth hub, but local government offers comprehensive support on land, labor, and energy. The district party secretary's goal of 'dragon-head leading, chain linking, cluster synergy' reveals an ambition to attract downstream suppliers and form a new material cluster.
For Yongguan, the Dongxiang base has operated for 14 years, offering skilled labor and low political friction. Land and energy costs are significantly lower than in Yangtze River Delta or Pearl River Delta. But electronic cloth customers—CCL makers—are concentrated in Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. Logistics from Dongxiang to Pearl River Delta is ~800 km, to Yangtze River Delta ~600 km, adding cost and time.
The 2,000-ton capacity translates to roughly 2 million meters of standard 7628 cloth, about one-third of a mid-sized CCL plant's annual consumption. Securing 2-3 major CCL customers' certification is feasible, but certification cycles last 6-12 months with multiple reliability tests, making rapid scale-up difficult.
Downstream Demand: 5G Afterglow and Automotive Electronics
The global electronics industry is at a structural upgrade node, with automotive electronics, 5G/6G, and data center switches driving demand for high-frequency CCL. The domestic electronic cloth market was ~8 billion yuan in 2024, growing 8-12% annually. Low-Dk cloth (Dk≤4.5) has less than 30% domestic substitution rate, offering the highest margins.
Yongguan's timing coincides with a window for import substitution. However, since H2 2024, the CCL industry has entered a destocking cycle, with some small players at below 70% capacity. If demand hasn't recovered by 2026, the 2,000-ton capacity may face temporary oversupply.
