The polyester staple fiber market has recently shown a noteworthy signal: spot prices from major suppliers remain stable with a firm undertone, while bullish capital accelerates into the futures market. On July 29, Xiamen Xianglu quoted its semi-dull direct-spun 1.4D*38mm polyester staple fiber at 7,800 yuan/ton for short-distance delivery, unchanged from previous levels. As a leading supplier in the industry, this price provides clear support for the spot market, with price-supporting sentiment strengthening.

Spot-Futures Linkage Strengthens

The futures market responded more directly. The main contract 2609 on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange closed at 7,478 yuan/ton on the same day, up 102 yuan/ton, or about 1.38%. Trading volume reached 156,816 lots, while open interest increased by 5,250 lots, indicating clear bullish positioning. After breaking through the 7,400 yuan psychological level, the technical picture shows a strong trend.

From a basis perspective, the spread between spot and futures stands at approximately 322 yuan/ton. This basis level is within a reasonable range, reflecting neither extreme premium nor discount, and suggests that spot prices are providing support to futures. For downstream buyers, the current basis structure does not offer a clear cost advantage for direct spot purchases, but the firmness in futures further solidifies spot price expectations.

Industry Transmission Logic

Polyester staple fiber price movements result from multiple factors. On the cost side, PTA and MEG prices have recently stabilized, keeping the polyester chain's profit structure relatively steady. On the supply side, Xiamen Xianglu's pricing strategy often serves as a bellwether for the region; its decision to hold prices steady rather than cut signals manageable inventory levels across the industry.

Demand shows a divergent pattern. Downstream yarn mills operate at around 60% capacity, with some small and medium-sized spinners hesitant to buy at elevated prices. However, large weaving mills continue restocking for essential needs. The bullish positioning in futures reflects more of an expectation play for the traditional third-quarter peak season rather than a surge in actual transaction volumes.

Short- and Medium-Term Outlook

In the short term, polyester staple fiber prices are likely to maintain a range-bound to firm pattern. Spot prices have strong support from major suppliers, while bullish capital remains active in futures, creating a temporary resonance. However, contract 2609 matures in September 2026, leaving a long window; the current futures rally is more sentiment- and capital-driven than a reflection of genuine spot tightness.

Over the medium term, the key variable is the pace of recovery in downstream textile and garment export orders. If third-quarter external demand picks up as expected, polyester staple fiber could gain further upward momentum. Conversely, if end-consumer demand remains sluggish, the current spot-futures strength may prove unsustainable, with downside risks emerging.

Practical Recommendations

For Buyers - Given the current basis level, consider moderate long hedging on the futures market to lock in forward procurement costs and protect against further spot price increases. - Monitor subsequent pricing moves by major suppliers like Xiamen Xianglu. If consecutive stable or higher prices emerge, accelerate essential purchases.

For Foreign Trade Companies - Polyester staple fiber price fluctuations transmit through yarn and fabric stages to final export quotes. Foreign trade firms should track spot-futures dynamics and include raw material price adjustment clauses in long-term export contracts. - The third quarter is the traditional peak season for export preparation. If futures prices continue to strengthen, secure partial order volumes with upstream suppliers early to mitigate future cost escalation risks.
