Yongguan New Material's latest investment in Dongxiang, Jiangxi, pushes the technical accumulation of a tape giant into a higher-end track. With 300 million yuan and an annual capacity of 2,000 tons of electronic-grade glass fiber cloth, the figure may not be huge in the electronic cloth industry, but it is enough to stir the domestic substitution landscape in the mid-to-high-end market.
Background
The electronic-grade glass fiber cloth project signed by Yongguan New Material and the Dongxiang District Government involves a total investment of approximately 300 million yuan, with a planned annual capacity of 2,000 tons. The choice of Dongxiang is no coincidence—the company has been rooted there for 14 years, and its existing glass fiber tape and cloth-based tape production lines have accumulated core processes such as precision weaving, sizing, tension control, and surface treatment. These are precisely the key technologies for producing electronic-grade glass fiber cloth.
Electronic-grade glass fiber cloth is the core reinforcing material for copper-clad laminates (CCL), directly affecting the dielectric properties and mechanical strength of PCB boards. Currently, the global electronic information industry is at a node of structural upgrading, with growing demand in application scenarios such as automotive electronics, 5G/6G communications, and data center switches, driving rapid demand for high-frequency, high-speed, and ultra-thin electronic cloth.
Industry Impact
From an industry chain perspective, Yongguan's move is not cross-industry but vertical extension. Its original glass fiber-related tape products already involve the glass fiber weaving process; this investment in electronic cloth elevates the process precision from tape-grade to electronic-grade. This means the company must cross not only capacity scale but also a qualitative threshold of product consistency and cleanliness.
For Dongxiang, the project signifies a regional industrial structure upgrade. The Dongxiang District government has explicitly pledged comprehensive support in land, labor, and energy, focusing on new materials as a core track to build a pattern of "leading enterprises driving, chain linkage, and cluster synergy." If the electronic cloth project succeeds, it may attract upstream glass fiber yarn and downstream CCL companies to form a regional new materials cluster.
However, challenges are equally significant. Electronic-grade glass fiber cloth has long been dominated by Japanese Nitto Boseki and U.S. AGY. Although domestic players like China Jushi and Honghe Technology have made breakthroughs, high-end products still rely on imports. As a new entrant, whether Yongguan's process heritage can translate into product competitiveness depends on customer certification and batch testing.
