The pulse of innovation in the nonwoven materials industry is accelerating. The 14th 'Jinsanfa·Deyou·Baisha' Cup College Student Nonwoven Materials Development and Application Innovation Competition recently concluded its review session at Zhongyuan University of Technology in Zhengzhou, with a record high of 265 entries. This figure alone signals a rapid expansion in the talent supply side of the nonwoven sector, coupled with an equally strong demand from the industry for fresh blood.
Industry Signals Behind the Competition
The 265 entries came from 38 universities nationwide, reflecting the growing weight of nonwoven materials in higher education. Li Lingshen, Vice President of the China National Textile and Apparel Council, emphasized that the competition aims to bridge the gap between talent cultivation and industry needs. This highlights a industry pain point: despite rapid technological iteration, composite talents who understand both processes and innovation remain scarce.
With one grand prize, three first prizes, 29 second prizes, and 81 third prizes, the award rate of about 43% indicates high overall quality. Ji Xiaofeng, President of the China Textile and Apparel Education Society, stressed that the next step is to deepen the school-enterprise collaborative education mechanism to facilitate the commercialization of student innovations. This suggests that the industry-academia-research chain in nonwovens will become more compact, shortening the cycle from lab to production line.
The Upgraded Role of Central China
The competition was held at Zhongyuan University of Technology in Zhengzhou, not by coincidence. Central China has been steadily building its nonwoven industrial ecosystem, from raw material production to finishing. The event strengthened the tripartite collaboration among local industry, universities, and trade associations, helping to transform competition outcomes into regional competitive advantages.
For buyers, this means Central China is emerging as a new supply node for nonwoven materials. Traditionally concentrated in the Yangtze and Pearl River Deltas, the region's improving capacity and technology may offer more flexible sourcing options and better cost structures. Foreign trade companies should reassess Central China's role in the nonwoven value chain, especially in high-end applications like medical, hygiene, and filtration.
Innovation and Sustainability: Hard Constraints for Transformation
The competition's theme, 'Innovation and Sustainability,' is not just a slogan but a real challenge for the nonwoven industry. Global demand for biodegradable and recyclable nonwovens is rising, and stricter environmental regulations in markets like the EU force domestic companies to accelerate technology reserves. Among the 265 entries, many likely focus on bio-based raw materials, hydroentanglement optimization, and recycling of waste nonwovens.
According to public industry data, China's nonwoven output grew by about 5.8% year-on-year in 2025, but export growth slowed due to stricter overseas environmental compliance checks. If these student innovations can be successfully commercialized through school-enterprise cooperation, they could directly help domestic companies overcome green trade barriers. Li Guimei, President of the China Nonwovens & Industrial Textiles Association, noted that the evaluation criteria gave significantly more weight to sustainability, guiding participants' focus.
