A major industry conference in Lingping, Hangzhou, has drawn a clear roadmap for the technological transformation of the apparel sector. The 2026 Apparel Industry Science & Technology Innovation Conference and Digital Transformation Supply-Demand Matchmaking Meeting, held on July 28-29, delivered a core judgment: the industry must shift from homogeneous product competition to differentiated brand competition, with AI and data intelligence serving as the underlying support.
Data Reveals Industry Fundamentals
Data released by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Economy and Information Technology at the conference outlines the real scale of China's textile and apparel industry. In 2025, Zhejiang's above-scale textile and apparel enterprises achieved operating revenue of 1.12 trillion yuan, accounting for 25.5% of the national total; textile exports reached $95.331 billion, representing 32.4% of the national total. Both indicators rank first in the country. This means Zhejiang is not only a manufacturing hub but also an export bellwether. Lingping, as the core area of Hangzhou's apparel industry, contributes 80% of Hangzhou-style women's wear, gathering over 6,200 industry chain enterprises and more than 100 brand headquarters, with output value exceeding 20 billion yuan. The transformation path of this industrial cluster has demonstrative significance for the whole country.
Nine Pathways Define Technology Direction
In his keynote speech, Chen Dapeng, President of the China National Garment Association, systematically elaborated on the scientific and technological innovation framework for the apparel industry during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. The goal is two-step: basically realize brand power by 2035 and build a fashion power by the middle of this century. To achieve this, an industrial science and technology innovation system characterized by 'full-chain digital intelligence, full-scenario functionality, and full-dimension greening' must be constructed. Specific implementation pathways include nine directions: AI and data intelligence, intelligent R&D innovation, iterative upgrading of smart manufacturing equipment, comprehensive leapfrogging of smart factories, restructuring of supply chain and industrial software, sustainable and green transformation, breakthrough in smart wearable technology, integration of functionality and fashion, and intelligent marketing upgrading. These 28 tasks cover the entire chain from fiber to end products.
A noteworthy detail is that 2026 is defined as the first year of large-scale application of AI agents. Li Xia, Chief Architect of the Manufacturing Digital Transformation Promotion Center, pointed out that data silos and inconsistent standards are the core bottlenecks for industry transformation. The national-level textile and apparel digital promotion center can already provide free digital diagnosis and customized solution services for enterprises. This indicates that the policy layer is actively lowering the threshold for small and medium-sized enterprises to embrace AI.
Smart Equipment and Operating Systems Accelerate Landing
Under the technology roadmap, some enterprises have already delivered quantifiable results. Qingdao Kutesmart showcased its KTOS enterprise-level intelligent operating system, which has been implemented in over 50 industries and 150 enterprises. Factory tests show management costs down by 81% and order process automation rate up to 81%. More critically, it does not require replacing existing equipment, significantly reducing the transformation resistance for traditional factories.
On the equipment side, Shanghai Fushan Precision Machinery launched a new generation of AI sewing machines with intelligent thread tension technology, including lockstitch, overlock, interlock, and double-needle machines. These devices have been deployed in the supply chains of leading brands such as Anta, Nike, and lululemon. From 'one-key intelligent operation' to 'unmanned workshops', the AI-ization of sewing equipment is moving from concept to large-scale application.
Fiber Innovation Drives Functionality and Intelligence Integration
Wang Dong, Vice President of Wuhan Textile University, emphasized in his speech that consumer demand for comfort, aesthetics, intelligence, and safety has fully exploded. The three comfort dimensions of heat-moisture, touch, and pressure have become core product competitiveness. Photochromic, thermochromic, and mechanochromic fibers give apparel dynamic interactive aesthetics; smart sensing fabrics can monitor human body status in real-time; special protective fibers empower military and outdoor harsh scenarios. This means that innovation on the fabric side is shifting from passively meeting demand to actively creating demand.
