On the same trading day, two types of polyester staple fiber products showed a price gap of more than double: water-treatment fiber balls were quoted at 15,500 CNY/ton, while spinning-grade melt-blown cotton-type staple fiber was only 7,360 CNY/ton. This spread is not a short-term fluctuation but a structural divergence between functional and commodity segments within the polyester staple fiber market. For buyers, the price tags mask completely different application scenarios, technical barriers, and supply structures, so procurement logic must be written separately.

Market Quotes Behind Industrial Divergence

Public quotes on August 3, 2026 showed that Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd. quoted fiber balls (ordinary grade) in three specifications (diameter 50mm, 40mm, 30mm) uniformly at 15,500 CNY/ton, with origin in Zhengzhou, Henan. The same day, Hebei Chujiao Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. quoted Huahong-brand polyester staple fiber (first-grade, 1.56dtex*38mm, melt-blown cotton type) at 7,360 CNY/ton delivered in Wuxi, Jiangsu, with another batch at 7,370 CNY/ton. The two products belong to the same broad category of polyester staple fiber but serve entirely different uses: fiber balls are mainly used for water treatment filtration, belonging to industrial textiles; spinning-grade staple fiber is used for cotton blending or pure spinning, targeting apparel and home textile fabrics.

The spread exceeding 8,000 CNY/ton implies a functional product premium of over 100%. This is not accidental—water-treatment fiber balls require specific fiber strength, chemical resistance, and bulk density, with higher production thresholds and downstream industrial clients who order in small batches with high customization, leading to lower price elasticity. In contrast, spinning-grade polyester staple fiber is a standardized commodity with concentrated capacity and intense competition, making its price closer to raw material costs. For buyers, using only "polyester staple fiber" as a keyword for price comparison risks ignoring the essential differences in supply chains and pricing mechanisms between these two products.

Regional and Supply Chain Transmission Signals

The geographic information in the quotes is equally telling. Fiber ball quotes are concentrated in Zhengzhou, Henan, while spinning-grade products are delivered in Wuxi, Jiangsu. Henan and Jiangsu correspond to different industrial belts: Henan has accumulated some expertise in water-treatment materials and environmental protection, while Wuxi is located in the Yangtze River Delta textile cluster, with dense polyester staple fiber capacity and spinning mills nearby. This geographic distribution means that when procuring fiber balls, buyers need to pay attention to capacity and logistics costs in the Central Plains, while for spinning-grade products, they rely more on dynamic inventory and futures linkage in the East China market.

From the perspective of quoting entities, Henan Kaijie is a producer direct quote, while Hebei Chujiao is a supply chain trader, with the latter's quote closer to market circulation prices. The role difference also suggests that trader quotes may fluctuate more frequently, while producer quotes are relatively stable. For large-volume procurement, directly contacting producers may yield better terms; for small urgent orders, traders' flexibility and spot availability offer advantages.

Price Expectations and Procurement Strategies

The spinning-grade polyester staple fiber price of 7,360 CNY/ton is in the lower-middle range of recent years. Considering the overcapacity in upstream PTA and MEG, there is limited upside for spinning-grade prices in the short term, but downside risk is narrowed by cost support. In contrast, fiber ball prices are more influenced by environmental policies and water-treatment project investment pace. If infrastructure and industrial water-treatment demand recover in the second half of the year, prices may remain firm or even rise slightly.

For buyers, procurement strategies for the two products should be completely different. For commodity spinning-grade products, long-term contracts are suitable to lock prices and reduce spot volatility; for functional fiber balls, more attention should be paid to supplier technical qualifications and product consistency rather than pure price comparison. Meanwhile, the market should be alert to substitution risks in fiber balls—polypropylene (PP) fiber balls and modified fiber balls may replace polyester fiber balls in some scenarios. Buyers should maintain technical tracking to avoid being locked into a single material.

For Procurement Teams - Distinguish application scenarios: for water-treatment projects, prioritize verifying fiber ball strength and chemical resistance; for spinning procurement, focus on defects and batch consistency. - Use quarterly long-term contracts for spinning-grade staple fiber, referencing futures and raw material cost ranges, and avoid chasing highs or selling lows. - For fiber balls, require third-party test reports and conduct on-site factory audits to prevent inferior products from small workshops.

For Foreign Trade Companies - When quoting exports, classify fiber balls as "industrial consumables" and pay attention to destination country environmental standards; for spinning-grade staple fiber, track anti-dumping duty changes. - Leverage logistics price differences between East China and the Central Plains to optimize container consolidation and warehousing layout, reducing overall procurement costs. - Establish a dual-supplier mechanism: sign two traders for spinning-grade products and one producer plus one backup for fiber balls to mitigate supply disruptions.
