On August 3, the domestic PTA spot market showed a rare divergence: in the same trading day, the premium-grade product in Nantong was quoted at 6,800 yuan per ton, while the same grade in Wuxi was only 5,950 yuan, creating a spread of 850 yuan. This gap far exceeds typical logistics and quality premiums, indicating that PTA pricing is no longer dominated by a single benchmark. Regional supply-demand imbalances and brand bargaining power are reshaping the price system.

Background

Public quotes show that the sample covers Jiangsu's Nantong, Wuxi, Suzhou, and Wuhan in Hubei, involving major suppliers such as Yangzi Petrochemical, Yisheng Dahua, Hengli Petrochemical, and Hengli Dalian. Notably, Nantong Zhonghe Chemical quoted 6,800 yuan for Yangzi material, Wuhan Hengjiu Chemical quoted 6,800 for Yisheng Dahua, while Nanjing Wai'en Chemical quoted 5,950 for both Hengli and Yisheng, and Nanjing Shuangjie Chemical quoted 6,100 for Yisheng and Hengli Dalian.

The same brand shows clear price differences across regions. For example, Yisheng Dahua was quoted at 6,800 in Wuhan, 5,950 in Wuxi, and 6,100 in Suzhou. This phenomenon of different prices for the same cargo indicates that regional inventory levels, transportation radius, and local competition are gaining weight in determining transaction prices. For buyers, simply tracking the East China average is no longer sufficient for practical operations.

It is worth noting that the upper and lower ends of the quote range correspond to different traders, not simply by brand. This implies that traders' risk appetite and capital costs also influence quotes, and the market is transitioning from factory-based pricing to multi-agent negotiated pricing.

Industry Impact

The widening spread directly increases procurement complexity for downstream polyester plants. With an 850 yuan per ton gap, the cost difference per ton of raw material is equivalent to 2%-3% of polyester chip production costs, enough to change the breakeven point of an order. Therefore, large polyester enterprises with multi-point procurement capabilities will gain a competitive advantage, while small and medium factories relying on a single supplier face higher cost volatility risk.

From a supply chain perspective, PTA price divergence may accelerate consolidation in the polyester segment. When regional spreads persist, the deviation between contract pricing and spot pricing will widen, prompting some plants to shift to more flexible procurement models. Meanwhile, traders' arbitrage space expands, and cross-regional transfer activity is expected to rise, which in turn will suppress further spread expansion, forming a self-regulating mechanism.

For upstream PX suppliers, PTA price divergence means their pricing power is weakened. The model of determining PTA prices based on PX cost plus margin is being revised by regional supply-demand and trader strategies. This change may prompt more PTA plants to lock in raw materials through long-term contracts to reduce the erosion of profits by spot fluctuations.

Practical Suggestions

For Buyers - Establish a regional quote monitoring system, focusing on price differences among Wuxi, Suzhou, and Nantong, and use spread windows for cross-regional comparison procurement. - Introduce regional benchmark prices or price adjustment clauses in contract negotiations to avoid overestimation or underestimation caused by a single average price. - Be cautious about brand premiums, and prioritize verifying supply stability and quality consistency rather than just looking at quote levels.

For Foreign Trade Enterprises - When quoting export orders, incorporate the regional spread of PTA procurement into cost calculations to avoid squeezing export profits due to raw material price fluctuations. - Monitor the linkage between RMB exchange rate and domestic PTA spreads, and consider locking in raw material costs when signing forward export contracts. - Leverage trader quote differences to explore flexible supply agreements with multiple suppliers to mitigate regional supply disruption risks.
