On August 3, the polyester staple fiber market reported a striking price divergence: water treatment fiber balls (30-50mm diameter) held steady at 15,500 CNY/ton, while cotton-type spinning grade 1.56dtex*38mm melt-blown products were quoted at only 7,360-7,370 CNY/ton, a gap exceeding 8,000 CNY/ton. This rare divergence is not accidental—it reveals fundamentally different supply-demand dynamics in two major downstream application areas, reminding buyers that polyester staple fiber is no longer a single-priced commodity but a differentiated product priced by application.
The Industrial Logic Behind Price Divergence
Public quotes show that Henan Kaijie Water Treatment Co., Ltd. reported all three specifications of fiber balls (ordinary grade) at 15,500 CNY/ton, delivered in Zhengzhou, serving the water treatment filter media sector. Meanwhile, Hebei Chujiao Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. quoted Huahong-brand cotton-type staple fiber (1.56dtex*38mm, melt-blown) at 7,360-7,370 CNY/ton in Wuxi. The former price is more than double the latter, and the specification differences (diameter vs. denier) place them in distinct market segments.
Fiber balls, used as water treatment filter media, are primarily applied in wastewater advanced treatment and oilfield produced water filtration. Demand is driven by infrastructure and environmental policies, exhibiting rigidity. In contrast, cotton-type polyester staple fiber is blended with cotton or used pure to produce yarn, directly linked to apparel and home textiles. Weak textile orders have made spinning mills cautious, pressuring prices. This pattern of "strong environmental rigidity, weak textile consumption" explains why quotes within the same PSF category are so divergent.
Transmission Effects on the Industrial Chain
The high price gap transmits in both directions. For upstream petrochemical producers, high-value-added products like fiber balls (e.g., from specialized filter media makers like Henan Kaijie) effectively hedge against profit compression in conventional staple fiber, prompting some capacity shifts toward differentiated products. However, the fiber ball market is limited in scale and cannot fully absorb overcapacity in conventional grades. For downstream spinning mills, the 7,360-7,370 CNY/ton level is close to cash costs for some enterprises. If raw material prices remain low, yarn quotes may further decline, but this also offers buyers a window to lock in low-cost raw materials.
Notably, the same brand (Huahong) showed two quotes in Wuxi—7,360 and 7,370 CNY/ton—differing by 10 CNY/ton, typically reflecting nuances in transaction volume and payment terms. Overall, cotton-type staple fiber prices are already in a recent low range, while fiber ball prices remain firm, indicating that the environmental filter media market is less affected by economic cycles. If this divergence persists, it will encourage more traders to focus on niche opportunities rather than mere scale.
